We should all be decent, empathetic, and compassionate enough people that the demographic breakdown doesn’t create a negative effect like that.

I’m one of the many cis dudes here, and I just cannot get offended when it gets pointed out that other dudes can be assholes. Or that other Americans can be assholes. Or other humans, for that matter.

I clip my keys themselves to whichever thing I have to bring with me or remember.

For me, a proper reminder needs to have a property like physically preventing progress until I take care of the thing, or jumping up and demanding my attention until I take care of the thing.

The most basic form is that if I need to do something tomorrow at noon, I don’t create a reminder. I create an alarm! And if the alarm goes off and the thing is not done, I snooze it instead of stop it.

It’s not owning allegiance to your class. It’s giving a shit about your fellow humans.

It’s wanting a government and economy that allows the vast majority to have a nice life, and not insisting that millions should suffer so that a tiny fraction of the most wealthy people least in need of money can take the massive net worth they will never spend and add a zero to the end of it.

Yeah, this level of cognitive dissonance and lining up to support the people taking advantage of you are entry-level conservatism.

Well, it WOULD be, but I have plans with friends in 6 hours so today is totally shot to hell. Plus I need to rest and recover from the stress of thinking about the thing all day yesterday.

I’m 0% an expert in this, but I think they move at light speed all the time. Light is “affected” by mass only indirectly, since the light travels in a straight line through local space but space itself is curved by the mass.

Yep. Imagine you’re off in space such that you, the sun, and the earth make an equilateral triangle. The sun disappears, then after 8 minutes you see it disappear. Then after ANOTHER 8 minutes you see the earth go dark, because that light had to cover two of the 8-light-minute long legs of the triangle.

Yeah I think infinite is the wrong word for them to use there. Maybe call it maximally fast? Like it goes as fast as possible no matter your reference frame, but that speed is limited by the speed of causality. The photon has 100% of its skill points in speed through space and 0% on speed through time.

Your third paragraph hits on something I had to realize in my “how to enjoy existence” journey. Put simply, don’t discount meatspace. Sometimes your brain needs those experiences even if you think you don’t. Plus with any current or near future technology, consuming media about a place is not the same as being there. There is no comparison vs the data throughput of all of your senses, even before you get to the social/cultural aspect and being able to interact.

I’m in the US and have coworkers in Europe along with the ones local to me. We talk almost every day, and interacting with them led me to learn a bit on my own about their area, culture, etc.

I’ve also gotten to visit a couple times over the past couple years, and yeah like I said there’s no comparison. You get a lot of the vibe for a place in all that extraneous data your senses are always generating. Just seeing how the people carry themselves, and the different ways various mundane everyday stuff is done, it all incrementally builds into a more cohesive experience.

The government is run by people, so he just needs a critical mass of followers in important positions in order to gum things up. That’s why the #1 and perhaps only thing he cares about in other people are how much they like him and how loyal they are. Also to him.

I have no idea why it started that way, but in everyday speech we say dates with the month first. So that makes MDY just the thing everybody is used to.

Fortunately the ISO format YYYY-MM-DD still has the month before the day, so I don’t have to worry about my fellow Americans getting it confused.

A ton can change just based on your mindset. There’s a lot of that subject in stoic and (secular) Buddhist philosophy. It’s not sticking your head in the sand, but rather practicing being more in control of your mental state while processing the things you need to process.

For instance in Buddhism one of the three poisons is attachment, or sometimes called greed. Having high expectations of other people and relying on their actions to inform your mental state is just setting yourself up for failure.

This feels like some strained both-sidesing here.

Calling the traitorous self-serving felon that caused an actual attack on the government and the Democratic process “a threat to democracy” seems tame, honestly. And that’s not even getting into his promises to jail political opponents, be a dictator on day one, suspend the constitution, call the free press an enemy of the people, and claim absolute authority and absolute immunity.

But then that whole political group also seems convinced that a barely progressive status quo “let’s work together” administration is literally totalitarian tyranny.
