Although a backup is still required or you are gambling on hardware outliving your need for your data.
Hi I’m Tim.
I’m AuDHD - officially diagnosed ADHD and self-diagnosed (for now) with ASD. I also suffer from a great deal of Imposter Syndrome.
Although a backup is still required or you are gambling on hardware outliving your need for your data.
The right is in a panic and pushing this “questionable legality” and “it’s too late to change their candidate” nonsense. They are publicly running on the issues of banning abortion, putting tariffs on everything coming into the country, and mass deportation of “illegals” that are taking “Hispanic, Black, and union” jobs at record rates. That last part of which I don’t know how the media hasn’t called it out for being overtly racist and complete bullshit. Yet they let it slide at the debate, because they were all racing to write about Biden, and then again at the RNC.
All these “journalist” need to stop with these “both sides” headline bullshit. The RNC contained nothing about unity, and they continued their calls for violence. The media needs to wise up at some point and realize that a Trump win means that Project 2025 will allow him to turn all media into state sponsored propaganda machines, else lose their license and be out of business. So unless they all want to be the next RT (which Trump really only needs one), they better stop this whole “balanced” nonsense and start reporting on these monsters for the danger that they are. Continuing to treat them like they have “turned a corner” just continues to normalize their destruction of norms and disdain for the law.
This title should read more like, “During an unhinged RNC, GOP nominate Trump and call on MAGA to ‘fight, fight, fight’ against democracy”.
Seems I hit a nerve, sorry.
Lol, WTF are you talking about? Every bit of this is ignorant. Let me correct you so you’re not running around embarrassing yourself:
- SteamOS was based on Debian. Never had anything to do with Ubuntu. The reason they switched was because it was easier to use an Arch build system to make their own base OS image immutable, but still build native modules to include as well as BSP drivers. Simple.
Yes, sorry I got SteamOS and Steam for Linux conflated. While SteamOS has moved from Debian, the Steam for Linux github still lists “Latest Ubuntu or Ubuntu LTS with a 64-bit (x86_64, AMD64) Linux kernel”. As for the move for SteamOS to Arch, taken from Alberto Garcia who made the pitch and was on the team doing the work described it as such.
SteamOS 3 "is a customization layer on top of Arch Linux; almost all of the packages come directly from Arch, without being changed or even rebuilt. The Arch Linux philosophy is for packages to be as close to upstream as possible; downstream patches are not applied “unless it is really necessary”. SteamOS has adopted the same philosophy; when there is a problem with a package, it is fixed upstream whenever possible.
And you are correct in that they then use the Arch image to make an immutable A/B partitioning scheme for SteamOS. But you must also agree that Arch gets them using upstream packages instead of stale outdated ones if left on Debian, and is the reasoning behind the change.
- Ubuntu is the most widely used base of Linux on the planet, desktop and cloud included.
It may well be, but I think it is a disservice to new people for anyone to push them towards a distro that will be running outdated software from day 1 of their install (especially since these people are “gamers”). Oh but you just need to add a PPA! Super, add in the many someone wanting to run any semblance of an updated system might want and guess what, update time and Ubuntu just fell over. OK, maybe they somehow manage to preemptively disable all the PPA repos they have added before upgrading, yay!, I would say it’s still a 50/50 on if Ubuntu shits the bed on upgrade anyway. (I ran Ubuntu for many years before I learned my lesson)
- Valve writes their own modules for their drivers. This is the dumbest thing you’ve asserted so far in that Ubuntu somehow is responsible for drivers. Because you seem to know nothing about Linux in general, I’ll just let you know the kernel handles the detection and loading of modules and drivers. Any distro on 6.8 has the same ability to detect and load drivers for any other distro running 6.8. I have no idea why you thought this had something to do with packaging in distros lolz.
When did I assert anything you are alleging?? And I understand how loading modules works, thanks. I also know that when update your system base more then every 6+ months, that sometimes system libraries change, and sometimes modules need to be recompiled against them. Also using kernel 6.8 is a great example of how running an outdated distro IMHO would put a “gamer” at a disadvantage, when 6.10 was just released. And with these kernel updates come new modules for newer hardware, as well as fixes for filesystems, etc. (all things that would be helpful if you want to game on your PC and not just “work”)
- Do you know what a backport is? It seems you do not.
What did I mention that was incorrect about backports? They happen all the time for distros that need to maintain an LTS for years, allowing them to fix bugs without needing to move everything forward. Do I have it correct now?
Anyway, your entire understanding of how everything works is wrong. You should read more.
I appreciate your talking down to me, you are truly the Linux ambassador we have been awaiting! All hail @just_another_person@lemmy.world! All hail @just_another_person@lemmy.world! May his reign be long and prosperous! Everyone else RTFM!
Ubuntu is also stale old software, and shouldn’t be a distro anyone wanting a functional box running new hardware/software should use. Valve realized this and moved SteamOS to Arch so they would have a current stack not constantly 6+ months behind upstream, needing to backport everything to an outdated stack.
I don’t understand how these students would even still be around to graduate when Project 2025 has them all being rounded up. This is clearly a case of Trump saying shit for someone trying to get their vote with 0% intent to follow through on it, because he only cares about himself.
If you’re out there working and didn’t go to college, Joe Biden’s forgiving student loans, and you’re paying for them,” the Republican senator said on Fox News Sunday.
OK, so my pennies, which amount to a rounding error, are making it so someone else can get their head above water? What is the bad/scary/dictator part?? They are so afraid of education, as the second you can do critical thinking their whole fear mongering platform of lies falls apart.
What percentage of Signal users is “grandma” that uses Linux and would be messaging from her PC? I would have to imagine the overwhelming vast majority of Signal users are on mobile only, so packaging for specific distros is probably far down the priority list.
This every night. And then I also get up early, or I don’t have enough time to build up dopamine to make my day a little easier (especially pre-meds and ultimately the end of the day when meds are done for the day).
OP, what distro are you running? You mention a whole bunch of package formats they don’t provide, but never mention what format you require. Depending on the distro, making a build script (or converting the .deb) really isn’t Rocket Surgery ™.
Or, if you are running one of those distros you could just take the .deb and repackage it for whatever distro you’re running. Expecting a project to package for every distro, and then be required to support them for every release is a lot of work. And unfortunately some people have no issues expecting from others, but baulk at the idea of doing it themselves.
Sometimes it comes down to support. For every distro specific format you build and package for, the more you need to do with every release (and need the proper config and to be comfortable packaging for each).
Could always do what looks like the Arch AUR package is doing and build it yourself from source. Or if you are running a Fedora/OpenSuse distro you could find a package on COPR or something that converts a package from a .deb to .rpm and just change source and stuff to match signal.
I wonder what the GOP take on Hunter’s trial is going to be? I’m going to go out on a limb and say, if convicted they will praise it, while at the same time saying Biden has the DOJ weaponized against Trump. If Trump’s DOJ hadn’t shut down all investigations into his crimes I’m sure his Federal ones would have started while he was still in office. He also wouldn’t have had to rush to announce his running to make his cases “political” even though nothing states he can’t be held accountable and campaign at the same time. Running alone shouldn’t be treated as some shield to prosecution as it is due to everyone afraid of looking “political” and feeding right into the crazy arguments from criminals.

Troupis @ 70 yrs old doing crime could mean his last days could be in a cell if he were to get the full 6 yrs possible. That kind of blind loyalty to Trump that has zero F’s for this man just shows how sad it is to be a member of a cult.
My Atari joystick still works, it’s more my Intellivision controllers. But having a nicer way to play on a modern TV with the original games with higher quality controllers would be amazing.
Sounds like more reason to burn “the evidence” (aka cremate) afterwards. Not sure how staking bodies in a building is a long term solution. I guess when you’re the kind of person that can do that to people grieving, you’re also not too bright.
His CFO is also doing his 2nd round at Rikers because he would rather purger himself then snitch on the crime boss. And also something to do with his “don’t flip” NDA he has with Trump that gives him a bonus for not cooperating with law enforcement that came to light during this current trial.
It was delayed till September as the judge needs to look at evidence admitted in the case that may now fall under the Supreme Courts made up presidential immunity ruling. Trump’s team is trying to argue that the case should be tossed because evidence of things Trump did while in office were used during the trial (even though the crime started while he was only a candidate and was all admitted into evidence prior to this newly manufactured ruling).
