I fucking hate this modern way of living.

The world is going to shit, for a large part because of terrible wars. So the “economy” and “markets” get unstable and prices rise. This causes companies to hike up prices way beyond any reason, because it’s an easy excuse to fill the pocket of the rich shits. All the prices going up is inflation, the price of living for the regular person going up and their money becoming less valuable. So that little bit of money a regular Joe has saved up is becoming less and less valuable by the second.

Then, and this is the real kicker, all the companies start going like “Damn the inflation is so high, we have no choice but to raise prices, sorry not sorry”. No shit you dumb fucks, you are inflation, this is your doing.

And thus we are stuck in this endless loop where the rich become richer and the rest of the world just gets fucked one day at a time.

But luckily phones are cheap and we have access to the internet at all times. This way we can watch people die in the wars every day, see the rise of fascism in real time and get a second by second play of how fucked we all are.

I try to be optimistic, but the list of big issues keeps growing and instead of doing something useful about it, the world is falling apart. And this is on a macro and a micro level. The tensions and issues on a global scale are big, but people in day to day have also gotten worse in my experience.

I did the exact same. Google Play Music was actually a good service back in the day. I hated it when they turned it into YouTube Music. I complained about all the broken stuff, so they gave me a home speaker for free and upgraded me to YT Premium for a year. After that year I stuck with YT Premium, since it was less than $2 extra. They also fixed a lot of stuff I complained about. Not everything, but a lot of it. I think YT Music was released a bit before it was ready. Now it still has some issues, but is mostly fine.

Usually I watch 1 or 2 YouTube videos a day and without Premium I would most definitely not. I opened a YouTube video on a computer I wasn’t signed in the other day and it started with a 2 minute unskipable ad about crypto stuff (an obvious scam). So I closed it real fast, no video is worth sitting through that. Even with Premium I still need SponsorBlock. But with that combination watching videos is actually fun.

Still listen to YouTube Music all day at work, so that’s a good value for money for me.

Is this an American thing? We did absolutely not have to memorize any of that thing. We had to understand the structure, why the rows and columns etc. But memorizing it serves no purpose.

With every class including tests and exams we were allowed to use a reference book. This book was pretty thick and contained a whole lot of info including the periodic table and all the info about elements you could ever need.

I think my education (keep in mind this was 25 years ago) was focused more on the why and less on the what. If you understand why something is the way it is, the reason behind it and how to use it, you know a lot more than just being a flesh book that can list a bunch of facts.

I actually like mild turbulence on a plane. It makes me feel like I’m in a cradle which is being rocked. If the plane falls apart and we all die, not much I’m going to do about it. So no sense in worrying about it, just sit back and relax.

Huh? I can very easily fit an entire Pringle in my mouth. And I don’t think I have that big of a mouth actually. They also don’t have any sharp corners or break into sharp pieces, so I can eat it without worrying about cutting the inside of my mouth.

The show was shit though, they didn’t have the rights to all the source materials and the part they did have they didn’t understand. Then the execution was piss poor, with a shitty predictable story, terrible writing, awful set and costume design (due to a lacking budget, I’m sure the people involved were very talented and did the best they could) and mediocre acting. Plus way over the top poorly done cgi.

There’s plenty of online info about all the reasons it sucks ass, so I won’t reiterate here.

One thing that stuck in my mind was this actual piece of dialog: “Do you know why a ship floats and a stone cannot? Because the stone sees only downward. This is spoken by not only an ocean-faring people, but by persons that actually have actively navigated the open sea. Like I hope you have that buoyancy thing figured out my dudes, or you’re gonna have a bad time. Absolute drivel that doesn’t even make sense in the context of the show.

Yeah I never notice when I cut my hand or fingers. Back in the day computers were made of that crappy sheet metal with razor sharp edges. It often wasn’t till I saw the blood I noticed I had cut myself. I would curse because I needed to stop what I was doing and clean it up, often to find the smallest of cuts. So much blood from so small a cut.

You are right, but in this specific chart, they don’t include things like building the facilities, mining the materials etc. They just use the CO2 released whilst producing power, which with nuclear is very low. You can click on the chart and zoom in on the data, it’s pretty cool. (This is wrong, see edit)

The whole Germany situation is very complex and I was just jabbing, I live very close to Germany and work in Germany part of the time so I know something about it (but probably not everything). To me phasing out the nuclear wasn’t that much of an issue, but it could have been done way slower to make sure renewables filled the gap. Buying gas from Russia with the war in Ukraine is going on permanently hurt my soul.

Quickly phasing out nuclear is also a big middle finger to the countries in Europe that are looking to expand their nuclear power, but run up against long lead times. They would have gladly bought nuclear energy from Germany, which would mean way shorter lead times and prevent a lot of extra CO2 during construction of new facilities. Whilst building new big nuclear probably isn’t useful in combatting climate change, getting the most out of existing nuclear would have been.

The fuel coming from Russia isn’t as big of a deal to me, as there are plenty of sources around the world to buy from. With the amount of gas we’ve bought from the US recently, we could have easily bought some nuclear fuel as well. Now all these sources have their issues, I don’t like being beholden to the US and places like Niger or Namibia can have human rights issues.

Obviously nuclear isn’t the future and needs to be phased out, but in my mind this meant decades yet and not the rushed phasing out Germany did.

Edit: Just checked the source, they actually do include things like mining of the fuel, construction of the facilities, transport of the fuel etc. into the CO2 calculation. Nuclear just blows everything out of the water in terms of CO2. Only renewables come close, but in terms of CO2 nuclear is the best.

Just to stir up some shit: France is green because they have a lot of nuclear power. Which means a lot of energy for basically zero CO2. Germany could have been green, but opted to shutdown their nuclear facilities in what can only be described as a “hurt themselves in confusion” move.
