Canada@lemmy.ca•Canadian Media Gives American Fighter Jets More Favourable CoverageEnglish
0·2 months agoMany news agencies that operate in Canada (and claim to be Canadian) are owned by Americans, including several mentioned in this article. Post Media needs to be kicked out of the country.

Climate@slrpnk.net•The Trump administration’s new dietary guidelines promote foods, namely red meat and dairy, that take heavy tolls on the environment and climate.English14·3 months agoI’d imagine it’s because the beef and diary industry in the US is huge and heavily subsidised. It’d be like the US saying every meal needs to include a generous amount of corn products.

and here PP is celebrating Trump invading another country. This man couldn’t be more tone-deaf if he tried.

Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•Canadian City asks for urgent $1M to make safety improvements. Pedestrian deaths increased 225% last year English
8·11 months agoTotally unsurprising. Calgary is a car-centric urban sprawl of the worst sort. Entire urban districts are completely cut off and surrounded by either large stroads or actual highways. There are some houses near my grandparents place that literally live on a highway exit ramp. My sister came with us once while we were visiting and I took her for a drive around the city - she was in awe at how poorly planned the city is, and we are both from Vancouver which is a circus even on the best days.
$1mil isn’t even going to make a dent in this. Not even make a scratch. It won’t even pay for 1/8th of the initial investigation to determine where to best place the scratch. Calgary has sunk billions into horrible urban planning decisions and they continue to do so every day. That entire city is one giant web of stroads.

News@lemmy.world•'Did I Miss Something?': Online Shoppers Shocked as Trump Tariffs Jack Up Prices 145%English
7·1 year agoThis is by design. Decades of eroding education and critical thinking have produced a populace that is highly ignorant and extremely easy to manipulate.
There is a reason why attacking education is the first thing any right-wing government does.

Fuck Cars@lemmy.ml•TIL: violently mentally ill are allowed to own heavy murder SUVs and divers licenses, and aren't immediately charged after murdering 11 people and counting.English
12·1 year agoI hate cars as much as the next person here, but we know next to nothing about this person other than a single sentence statement from the police. And also charges haven’t been laid yet because the investigation is still ongoing and likely hasn’t been sent to the crown counsel yet.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How wil people react if Trump is right about Tariffs?English
17·1 year agoHe isn’t. He can’t be; not the way he has handled them.
Bringing industry and manufacturing back to US soil is actually not a bad idea at all but it’s a problem that needs to be tackled smartly and over a period of time so businesses can react. He is trying to force decades worth of economic migration in the span of a few months. For (hopefully) obvious reasons, that is impossible and the US economy is about to collapse.
And considering Trump, along with Musk at DOGE, have systematically destroyed economic and social safety-net programs… the aftermath of this is going to be catastrophic. The only way Trump is “right” about these tariffs is that they are an intentional sabotage of the US economy so him and his wealthy backers can cash out as the walls come crashing down. That is the goal and it’s going according to plan.

Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•‘Sorry mate, I didn’t see you’: when drivers look but don’t see cyclists on the roadEnglish
0·1 year agoI’ve noticed a few intersections around me have put up “Yield to bicycles when turning right” signs.
Sad that a basic fundamental rule of driving needs its own dedicated sign. It’d be like having a sign that says “Proceed on green”.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why are there no large demonstrations in the USA against Donald Trump's policies?English
491·1 year agoThere are. It’s just the US is a large car-centric country which makes travel difficult and the ruling party controls almost all of the media and thus there is a media blackout on protests.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL that 'Goldfish have a memory-span of at least three months and can distinguish between different shapes, colors, and sounds'English
9·1 year agoFish do too. Fish have pressure sensors down the lengths of their bodies they use for navigation, sensing prey and predators, and communicating.
My gouramis are making clicking noises in their tank as I type this. Love those things.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL that 'Goldfish have a memory-span of at least three months and can distinguish between different shapes, colors, and sounds'English
29·1 year agoMyths like this have always made me kinda angry. Anybody that has owned fish for more than a few days could easily say that this isn’t true at all.
But aside from that - animals simply wouldn’t exist if they were that stupid. The world is a dangerous place, especially underwater. Not having even basic memory and pattern recognition would be a one-way flight to extinction.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How effective would sanctions on the US by the international community be?English
43·1 year agoDepends on by whom and how long. The US produces a lot of things but also imports a lot of critical goods and materials as well.
If Canada, Mexico, China, and the EU & UK all banded together for sanctions or embargoes? The US economy would be pushing daisies pretty quick. Especially if the actions were coordinated and did not give the US time to react and adjust.
But the countries issuing those actions wouldn’t be in good shape either. Trade wars are a 2-way street.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How do the Republicans feel about Project 2025 now?English
5·1 year agoThis is why blaming conservatives or getting them to admit fault doesn’t work. It only makes them become more defensive and entrenched.
A better approach is to appeal to their victim complex. IE: Instead of “Trump is ruining this country and its your fault for voting for him!” try “Dude, Trump is screwing us! This isn’t the great America we were promised!” or some variation of that. Gotta use different tactics.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why aren't there mass protests in the USA?English
511·1 year agoThere are. Heaps of them.
The US is just a big place and very spread out. And the ruling government and its media conglomerates are trying to keep them out of the media.
