I’d agree with others that have said to use a framework like Hugo to serve an RSS feed. I wrote an automation using Google apps script to scrape blog pages and manually update the RSS feed but it was more trouble than it was worth. Letting your framework automatically update your feed is much easier.

Firmware is dumped almost immediately as well, not a big deal to update a switch offline.

That’s strange, having bridged my account to both, I actually feel the opposite. I have way more engagement on the Mastodon side to the point where I forget I bridged my account to bluesky.

I agree with you in part, but I find just wanted to put the footnote that good moderation isn’t censorship (unless it’s literally being used to suppress alternative viewpoints). Good moderation is just reminding everyone of your grandmother’s rule that if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it all. And there is nothing wrong in joining an instance like that and doesn’t make your instance an echo chamber.

I don’t think he’s being nasty to you. His frustration is with Rockstar for abandoning GTA to sell microtransactions instead of make content. A lot of people are mad at valve for not making Half-Life/Portal/Left4Dead 3 just like a lot of people are mad at Rockstar for taking 13 years to release a new GTA game.

I think it’s probably cheaper in the long run to self host a tree instead, unless you live in an apartment with absolutely no green space. But I’d rather get a VPF and host a tree there if I had too

I don’t know if your changed your view on the issue after getting more context on carrotcypher’s histoy on Reddit but I’d like to share some of my quick thoughts

1. I don’t think it’s probably fair to characterize him as a nazi but I do think it’s fair to find some of his views objectionable

2. He let his personal politics influence his moderation decisions outside of posted community rules. It’s bad moderation when Lemmy.ml doesn’t it and it’s bad when he does it,

3. Removing him as moderator is appropriate based on number 2 moreso than number 1

4. Defederation from FOSStodon is a nuclear reaction that I don’t personally agree with but it’s a freedom that the fediverse is built on. Zealously demanding all (non-malicious) instances remain federated is a bad thing as much as zealously defederating from instances that don’t have the right politics.

I often find myself outside the “acceptable viewpoints” on the fediverse and it hasn’t really affected me other than getting a few downvotes once in a while. The fediverse isn’t actually as ideologically pure as we think it is, I think the constant tankie/liberal drama is proof of that.

I get why people like steam. But as a steam hater, if GabeN ever dies and the kids or whoever is heirs are decide to sell to VCs or private equity. That 30% will be just as oppressive as anyone else’s.

If someone won’t put in the effort to understand federation even the slightest amount, then they will never make the switch and they are just complaining to hear their keyboard tap.

Just because the average user doesn’t consider whether they should trust the platform, doesn’t mean the fediverse is less trustworthy. It’s not. Nothing online should be considered trustworthy if it’s not encrypted.

You still have to consider whether Facebook is trustworthy with your posts and click data, whether the thousands of advertisers they sell your info too are trustworthy. Whether the persons you message are trustworthy and that they won’t get hacked.

About the same risks as with trusting a fediverse instance operator except they don’t have the same motivations to sell your data.

I’m not sure if you are aware of fediblock which allows instance operators to coordinate banning and defederating bad actors from the network. And of course you can always mute or block any user or instance you wish independently of your instance’s block list.

Your data being leaked to “malicious servers” in this case also requires approving a follow to a user on that instance or having your profile set to public (and at that point you should expect your content to be public)

I do think you are right that it is a paradigm shift of thinking for new users who aren’t familiar with federation. But I think anyone who wants to join will just either have to give up control to big platforms and stay put or shift their thinking.

I don’t agree that Lemmy is 90% politics. But it is pretty political especially since the US election and Elon Musk becoming quasi president means that there is a huge amount of politically related posts about tech. One of the most active topics on Lemmy.

For the most part I have effectively culled most of the politics I don’t want to see out of my feed but it wasn’t automatic which makes it a hurdle for people who aren’t invested in giving the fediverse a shot beyond the first impression.

• automatically filters certain politically charged keywords
• blocks certain communities and instances
• includes some of the more popular lighthearted communities
