  • No doubt LLMs are not the end all be all. That said especially after seeing what the next gen ‘thinking models’ can do like o1 from ClosedAI OpenAI, even LLMs are going to get absurdly good. And they are getting faster and cheaper at a rate faster than my best optimistic guess 2 years ago; hell, even 6 months ago.

Even if all progress stopped tomorrow on the software side the benefits from purpose built silicon for them would make them even cheaper and faster. And that purpose built hardware is coming very soon.

Open models are about 4-6 months behind in quality but probably a lot closer (if not ahead) for small ~7b models that can be run on low/med end consumer hardware locally.

  • I’d agree the first part but to say all Ai is snake oil is just untrue and out of touch. There are a lot of companies that throw “Ai” on literally anything and I can see how that is snake oil.

But real innovative Ai, everything to protein folding to robotics is here to stay, good or bad. It’s already too valuable for governments to ignore. And Ai is improving at a rate that I think most are underestimating (faster than Moore’s law).

Yeah, I don’t understand the hate that guy gets on Lemmy group think. He’s not a scientist, but so long as people dont view his ideas as absolute truth, I don’t see what is wrong with pointing at some unexplained mystery and asking ‘what if’

And to say it’s truly racist to state anything like that there might have been some ancient culture is just absurd.

People have their minds made up so he apparently falls into the heretic camp. I doubt many of the people here have actually read or watched his stuff. There are of course people that take what he says as gospel and that is also problematic.

That said, he’s been on more and more of woe is me the victim and it’s getting old.

The message is that it’s not only the unwashed pan handlers that are homeless. There are a lot of people that are or have been productive members of society that still become homeless. In the US a lot of the obvious homeless have major mental health conditions so many just assume that’s the main issue behind the majority of homless. When in reality it’s low wages that don’t keep up with inflation let alone inceases in cost of living

I was homeless in 2012 for about half a year. It was quite the eye openening experience. Most of us hid that we were homeless the best we could so the cops wouldn’t falsely arrest us for being “drunk in public”. Lot’s of people had cars but couldn’t afford gas. Roughly 80% of us never pan handled, and were as clean as we could be. I learned to sleep in the park during the day and keep moving at night.

  • Meh, having everything instantly legal would be too much especially without the funding for care centers where addicts can get help. As well as preventative systems for addicts.

Decriminalization is a step better but it doesn’t solve the problems of dealers lacing fentanyl into things people dont expect.

That said, it’s absurd to not already have things like psychedelics/weed/kratom decriminalization and small amounts of party drugs. The fact that the punishment for doing drugs far more harmful than the dugs themselves is mind boggling.

  • A large part of the old Testament is about the Jewish people and how they are God’s chosen people. In the new testament Jesus made it (to the Christian perspective) so everyone gets to be in that chosen club. The crucifix is a roman thing even though the angy mob was Jewish, Jesus was also Jewish, many followers of Jesus were Jews etc. Also some prophecies in the book of revelations (last book in the bible) but I don’t remember much off hand.

Add in the horrors of the Holocaust and its hard for people with a simplistic good or bad/binary worldview to even understand other perspectives.

  • In the US I don’t trust the phone and big tech companies to not sell my data, i dont trust the automobile industry to not lobby aganst good public transportation, and i don’t trust mega pharma to not SKU the test results when they could can away with it. I dont trust any of the above to not Astroturf, buy off ftc officials or anything if they are in a position to get away with it. Perhaps im just bitter because i was prescribed an absurd amount of opioids as a 16 year old. They were pushed so hard they told us it was safe they blantently lie
