A lot of people don’t understand that readability is about how fast someone can correctly understand that whole class/file/etc afterwards. Sometimes using enums improves that, sometimes not.

For enums specifically, it is good to be aware what you do with them. Often it directly maps to a decision. E.g. enum ExportType with values JSON/XML/CSV - instead of passing an enum value to a big function with 3 different paths, you could have 3 classes that have a common interface, and pass one of those to the function to use. That is nicer sometimes, other times not.

Another thing is that enums are often used to have a small INT DB column, which is not supposed to represent a number (like for math and stuff) but different options. In that case, yeah enum is perfect to describe in code what those numbers actually mean.

But yeah, it all comes down to: After you write it, look at your code and see if it makes sense quickly - if not, adjust.

The “move fast and break things” is from Silicon valley startup culture. Like, JS and PHP. No idea why you would think C++ is the poster child for fast iteration.

Yeah in also confused why they think it was a generic script - the story as a whole wasn’t lifted from any of the games AFAIK, but it followed along definitly-RE plot points.

For the less funny answer, a German kids TV channel was, well, a whole TV channel. It didn’t just cease to exist in the late hours, when it was definitely bedtime for kids.

So they made this puppet show(?), where this grumpy bread kept telling the viewer to go to bed, and engaging in several shenanigans to make them go to bed. And then always being disappointed/dejected that you’re still up and watching and bothering him. For hours on end, as it was basically playing the whole night through.

Retroactively people then said the bread was depressed (makes sense for somebody who’s down all the time), but long before that he already became cult in Germany. Because if you were like, an older kid who might stay up longer, you might watch some cartoons etc before “TV bedtime”, then maybe the TV is still on and HEY there’s Bernd with his grumpy shenanigans again.

Could even comment about the inflationary usage of the word “love” in American English, where people “love” the taste of a juice, the efficiency of a corporate business process, or the smell of napalm in the morning. Ancient Greeks were on the other end of THAT scale, with different words for different loves, even for e.g. the love for your home country.

Presenting your stuff to the public and wanting validation for it, that’s where half-assing often isn’t enough.
