Because in the case of YT, Google incentivizes slop farms, or at least they used to, supposedly they’re cracking down on slop farms now, but I don’t believe for a second that it’s for a good reason, instead why I think Google is allegedly cracking down on slop farms is to eliminate competition for their homegrown Veo 3 slop.

RPis have been pulling off Linux on ARM pretty well in terms of software support for a while now, but they’re also tinkering boards and not necessarily good for a daily driver.

The RX 550 is straight-up the lowest requirement for an HTPC as it will decode h.264 and h.265, which is the bare minimum requirement for that use case, so it’s a ‘Stick this in an old desktop you have laying around and there’s your HTPC’ kinda deal.

The bare minimum viable is an AMD CPU of some description, and an AMD GPU that can at the very least decode h.264 and h.265; an FX-4300 or R3 4100+RX 550 combo would be a good example for the bare minimum viable Linux HTPC build, as Polaris cards like the RX 550 can decode h.264 and h.265.

Ideally, you’d have an AMD CPU and an AMD GPU or integrated graphics in the case of an APU, that in addition to decoding h.264 and h.265, can also at least decode VP9 if not also AV1; an R5 3400G would be a decent HTPC APU in that case since Vega integrated can decode VP9 in addition to h.264 and h.265.

Beyond the hardware, set up the appropriate hardware acceleration so you can decode video through VA-API, and then set up Kodi and get a cheap tablet to install Kore on and use that for a remote.

A medium I haven’t used in forever, and only because I haven’t had fixative for a while, is chalk, and I would really like to pick that back up at some point.

There’s at two problems with that: VHS tapes and CEDs both degrade with each playback session, and CEDs even can get damaged or destroyed if you store them incorrectly (no wonder that format flopped and brought down RCA with it, lol…), and LDs have Laser Rot to deal with which is sadly becoming more common as some discs which were pressed in certain plants age.

VHS/Beta tapes, CEDs, and LDs if there’s any media that wasn’t released outside of those formats should be archived in some way ASAP due to the fragile nature of all three formats.

(and I say ‘fragile’ although LDs in theory should last indefinitely due to the lack of physical contact with that format vs. CEDs being read by a stylus and VHS and beta being read by a spinning head drum, but as I said, Laser Rot is an increasingly big problem with them)

*CEDs are literally video on vinyl, something that someone at RCA had to have been tripping on something to come up with, and that it’s a miracle that it even worked at all, given the inherent limitations of vinyl as a format.
