Bluetreefrog@lemmy.worldto Unpopular Opinion@lemmy.world•Community Locked / Going Dark in Protest [Meta] [Updated 2025-01-13]English1·4 months agoTLDR;
- LW policy perspective --> I agree on balance
- LW enforcing it on all LW communities --> I disagree as it is not necessary, but it’s their instance, so…
- Fediverse strength --> Move your community to another instance. I’ll susbscribe if you do.
I can see both sides.
On the one hand, history is replete with popular opinions that were later shown to be incorrect. One of the reasons I chose to move to Lemmy was the inherent resistance of the fediverse to the enforcement of a particular narrative, and the inherent potential for respectful discussion and debate. As long as people remain respectful, my inclination is to leave up content that I disagree with. Please note, it has to be respectful, not merely polite.
On the other hand, there’s no shortage of evidence that deliberate misinformation remains a threat in online communities. This is why we implemented no astroturfing and no sealioning rules in the larger community I help mod.
Holding these two competing thoughts, I think that points of view that run (edit: contrary) to the current scientific understanding should not be removed provided that the quantity is limited, it’s respectful and it’s not-harmful. But that’s just my perspective, and how we handle it in the communities I mod. The beauty of the fediverse is that I also have no problems with someone setting up a competing community that takes a much less tolerant perspective and has a rule that participation is conditional on agreement to certain perspectives.
Bluetreefrog@lemmy.worldMto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the best general-interest Lemmy instance?English0·4 months agoAny plans to move !asklemmy@lemmy.world to another instance?
No. What would be the point? There’s already one on .ml, and another one I’ve seen on a smaller instance.
Still a bit surprised you guys don’t have discussions regarding the community, that’s usually how we do it in the ones I mod, but you do you.
We do. Periodically we get the community involved in deciding the rules. Rule 6 was recently introduced after a community poll.
Bluetreefrog@lemmy.worldto Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•Car crashes into group of cyclists in Armidale, leaving one dead and others injuredEnglish1·4 months agoI wasn’t saying you were excusing the behaviour. I was saying that many, including the media do.
So what practical measures do you suggest to stop this from happening again?
Every accident I have been to (and I’ve been to a lot), was either caused by driver impatience (driving faster than the conditions, drink driving, fiddling with phone, etc) or deliberate intent (suicide). The former is a driver education and training problem. We need to train young drivers to accept delays as OK. As a former motorcycle rider, I taught my kids the importance of patience and driving as if the rest of the world was out to kill you. Every driver should have to do (and pass) a defensive driving course. Also, too many bad habits are passed from parent to child, so every driver should have to spend a prescribed amount of time with registered driving instructors. In Germany, you cannot get your drivers licence without spending time with registered driving instructors, and if you fail your test it costs 400-500 euros to repeat, so there’s a good incentive to learn the skills correctly the first time.
This was an organised event with signage etc… There are many things that could be done, but better driver education to overcome the “bikes shouldn’t be on roads” mentality would be a good start. Dedicated cycle lanes and a loosening of the ridiculous restrictions on e-bikes in NSW are some other things that would help imho.

Bluetreefrog@lemmy.worldto Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•Car crashes into group of cyclists in Armidale, leaving one dead and others injuredEnglish8·5 months agoThe whining on facebook about how cyclists should be banned whenever something like this happens does my head in. If you can’t stop your car within sight distance, you are driving too fast. Doesn’t matter if it’s a cyclist or a tree across the road. Slow down!

If you store data locally and you lose a machine, that’s bad but not the end of the world. If you store it centrally and you lose the data, that’s catastrophic. Nassim Taleb nailed this stuff. As you have worded it, I would be fine with that question provided they were respectful, and weren’t obviously sealioning or astroturfing. It would be thought/discussion provoking, open ended, and they might just end up reevaluating their beliefs as a consequence.
The comments might get spicy, but that’s what mods are for.
