Huh, so now it’s the verge, but less unique and creative. Not to disparage anyone doing redesigns, it’s a valiant effort.

I’m worried about this too. As a Jew I feel pretty weird about this whole thing. I’m generally against Israel and everything they do, and frankly I don’t care about having the first Jewish VP. Harris is already married to a Jew, and based on the rampant antisemitism that has only been growing over the last few years, I don’t think the country is ready for or would ultimately want a Jew first in line to the presidency. Doesn’t make it right, but winning is more important right now.
I think outside of elite circles, antisemitism is way worse than those in the circles think. I’m worried they don’t take the antisemites seriously enough nor do they realize just how antisemitic completely “normal” people are capable of being.
For example, over the last few weeks in my liberal Northern California community, there has been a group leaving antisemitic fliers (I’m talking swastikas and everything) on cars in parking lots. Antisemites are everywhere, regardless of whether or not Israel is currently committing genocide.
We need to win, firsts be damned.
Ideally, yeah, but think about the logistics of pulling something like that off. And would it be a full primary redo? Like fresh ballots sent out to all dems? Or do you mean a mini primary just with the existing delegates? Because we already voted in the Democratic primary election…
I’m just really trying to be pragmatic about this, I can’t imagine a scenario where we pull this off and come out stronger. I would love to be wrong.
Ugh. I agree that Kamala sucks, but I think it’d be a mistake to try to go with anyone else at this point. She has a pulse, a functional brain, lots of political experience, a long life ahead of her, and yeah, she’s made some terrible decisions and gaffs in her career, just like Joe Biden.
I don’t like that she was a cop, but Joe Biden chaired the Senate Judiciary committee for like 100 years, and got us Clarence Thomas, so…nobody has the moral high ground here.
We just need to win, and frankly I think if we try to go with someone new and untested, we’ll lose. We’ve been in a “lesser of two evils” situation for some time now.
I know you said to avoid the “just don’t connect it” advice, but I frankly think that’s your best bet without shelling out absurd amounts of money. I hate the concept of smart TVs, so like you I tried to find a reasonably priced dumb TV. Had zero luck. Instead, I bought a 55” Hisense TV (U8K) about 6 months ago, and have never once connected it to the internet. I think it’s technically a Google TV, but I wouldn’t know, since I just connect my devices to it, no internet necessary. It’s a gorgeous display with amazing picture quality. All the features are enabled, nothing was stuck behind an internet-wall. I don’t regret it.
I believe there are 3 kinds of musicians. Keep in mind I have no evidence for this, it’s just what I’ve experienced through a life of playing music and being around lots of musicians.
#1 is someone with natural ability, these are the people who seem to be able to pick up any instrument and intuitively understand how to make it sound like music. This is the rarest kind of musician.
#2 is someone with a little bit of #1’s natural ability, but like 70% of their skill comes from honing it through sustained, long-term practice. It’s hard, and can be incredibly frustrating, but also very rewarding. I’d say many if not most successful musicians fall into this category.
#3 is someone with none of #1’s natural ability, but a passionate desire to learn. With grueling long hours of practicing the basics, studying some theory, and intentional instruction, #3 is perfectly capable of playing an instrument beautifully, but it will be a lot more work for them than it would be for #’s 1 and 2.
It’s probably pretty similar to sports. Some people are naturals, but almost anyone can learn to be really good at them, it just takes a shitload of work.
I agree her behavior is abhorrent and she needs to feel some consequences, and I totally understand your sentiment, but violence isn’t going to help, nor will violent language. That’s what they do. We need to stay above reproach when it comes to threatening political violence. Just about anything short of violence is okay in my book. Civil disobedience? Absolutely. Sustained protest? Yes please. Harm to property? All good with me. But threats of personal violence need to stay off limits.
Dems need to grow spines and be more willing to fight dirty politically. They need to take some pages from the right wing book, but leave all the chapters about violence unread.
I don’t mean this to antagonize you, I totally get what you’re feeling, but I’m just really worried about this place and where we’re headed.
No he has had a secret service detail ever since he was elected, he didn’t refuse their protection after losing the election and leaving office.
Current presidents are required by law to have secret service protection, former presidents are entitled to lifetime protection, but can choose to refuse it. He hasn’t refused it.
Ugh I don’t miss that fool. He’s apparently writing fiction now…
I wish he would. The only thing stopping him, ironically, is his fear of appearing partisan (and angering “moderate” republicans, if they even exist anymore), despite the fact that that’s exactly what this would be attempting to remedy.
I’d love to be wrong, but he’ll never do it. He’s barely even willing to talk about the supreme court’s corruption and blatant bias. I think he’s allergic to that much institutional change.
Hoo boy the Alitos do not come off well. If the justice were true to his oath and had any respect left for his office, instead of staying silent he would have interjected and said something like, “thanks for the chat, you are completely entitled to your opinion. Isn’t our show on Martha-Ann? You folks have a good evening.” Not too hard, really.
Also, anyone else notice this subtle dig at the Post for burying their story?
When speaking to a Washington Post reporter (per a story published last week), that same day, Martha-Ann shouted that the flag was “an international signal of distress.”
That’s right. The Supreme Court’s legitimacy comes from our collective acceptance of their legitimacy. It’s a bit circular, but they stop being legitimate once we stop seeing them as legitimate. They have no enforcement mechanism.
I guess it would take multiple blue states blatantly disregarding their rulings to effectively send that message.
Well then, it’s time to start impeachment proceedings. I know we wouldn’t actually succeed at impeaching him, but it’s still a fight worth having. As of now, only a few dems have spoken out about this with any passion or substance. Their lack of urgency is incredibly frustrating.
They can’t use the “impeachment would be a partisan issue” excuse. It’s nonpartisan to want our Supreme Court to be nonpartisan.
You can’t win a fight if you never start it.
“We have published by mistake a modified version of this photo on the site,” the magazine wrote
Lol riiight, that’s believable. Why did you modify the photo in the first place? Someone had to actually do a couple minutes of work to remove the pin.
I wish people would just own their mistakes, not tell condescending and unbelievable lies about them. We’re not as stupid as they think we are.
Stories like this give me goosebumps. I’m so thrilled for her and her accomplishments. She sounds like an amazing person.
Then the goosebumps go away when I look at the downvotes and realize how many people, even here on Lemmy, have unfounded seething hatred for people they don’t know. She’s just trying to live her life, get over yourselves.
Oh it’s totally possible for them to be effective, they just very rarely are.
Whenever I fly, I put a lighter (I don’t smoke) and a full liquid hand sanitizer spritzer in random pockets in my carryon. I still separate my normal toiletries into the required quart-sized bag, but leave the liquid hand sanitizer and lighter in the bag as a kind of test. They have never once noticed or cared, and I travel a fair amount.
The best evidence for their common ancestry is from 2008, but it doesn’t look like there have been any new developments since then.
Molecular analysis of a shred of 68-million-year-old Tyrannosaurus rex protein — along with that of 21 modern species — confirms that dinosaurs share common ancestry with chickens, ostriches, and to a lesser extent, alligators.

It’s all security theatre.
Same. I’m so glad we somehow had cable on these things, because my class watched it happen live, right after wheeling this cart in to watch a history documentary. Lots of other teachers turned it off because tons of kids in my school had parents working in those buildings, but my teacher knew it was an important thing for us to see.
