  • I’m worried about this too. As a Jew I feel pretty weird about this whole thing. I’m generally against Israel and everything they do, and frankly I don’t care about having the first Jewish VP. Harris is already married to a Jew, and based on the rampant antisemitism that has only been growing over the last few years, I don’t think the country is ready for or would ultimately want a Jew first in line to the presidency. Doesn’t make it right, but winning is more important right now.

I think outside of elite circles, antisemitism is way worse than those in the circles think. I’m worried they don’t take the antisemites seriously enough nor do they realize just how antisemitic completely “normal” people are capable of being.

For example, over the last few weeks in my liberal Northern California community, there has been a group leaving antisemitic fliers (I’m talking swastikas and everything) on cars in parking lots. Antisemites are everywhere, regardless of whether or not Israel is currently committing genocide.

We need to win, firsts be damned.

  • Ugh. I agree that Kamala sucks, but I think it’d be a mistake to try to go with anyone else at this point. She has a pulse, a functional brain, lots of political experience, a long life ahead of her, and yeah, she’s made some terrible decisions and gaffs in her career, just like Joe Biden.

I don’t like that she was a cop, but Joe Biden chaired the Senate Judiciary committee for like 100 years, and got us Clarence Thomas, so…nobody has the moral high ground here.

We just need to win, and frankly I think if we try to go with someone new and untested, we’ll lose. We’ve been in a “lesser of two evils” situation for some time now.

  • I know you said to avoid the “just don’t connect it” advice, but I frankly think that’s your best bet without shelling out absurd amounts of money. I hate the concept of smart TVs, so like you I tried to find a reasonably priced dumb TV. Had zero luck. Instead, I bought a 55” Hisense TV (U8K) about 6 months ago, and have never once connected it to the internet. I think it’s technically a Google TV, but I wouldn’t know, since I just connect my devices to it, no internet necessary. It’s a gorgeous display with amazing picture quality. All the features are enabled, nothing was stuck behind an internet-wall. I don’t regret it.

  • I believe there are 3 kinds of musicians. Keep in mind I have no evidence for this, it’s just what I’ve experienced through a life of playing music and being around lots of musicians.

#1 is someone with natural ability, these are the people who seem to be able to pick up any instrument and intuitively understand how to make it sound like music. This is the rarest kind of musician.

#2 is someone with a little bit of #1’s natural ability, but like 70% of their skill comes from honing it through sustained, long-term practice. It’s hard, and can be incredibly frustrating, but also very rewarding. I’d say many if not most successful musicians fall into this category.

#3 is someone with none of #1’s natural ability, but a passionate desire to learn. With grueling long hours of practicing the basics, studying some theory, and intentional instruction, #3 is perfectly capable of playing an instrument beautifully, but it will be a lot more work for them than it would be for #’s 1 and 2.

It’s probably pretty similar to sports. Some people are naturals, but almost anyone can learn to be really good at them, it just takes a shitload of work.

  • I agree her behavior is abhorrent and she needs to feel some consequences, and I totally understand your sentiment, but violence isn’t going to help, nor will violent language. That’s what they do. We need to stay above reproach when it comes to threatening political violence. Just about anything short of violence is okay in my book. Civil disobedience? Absolutely. Sustained protest? Yes please. Harm to property? All good with me. But threats of personal violence need to stay off limits.

Dems need to grow spines and be more willing to fight dirty politically. They need to take some pages from the right wing book, but leave all the chapters about violence unread.

I don’t mean this to antagonize you, I totally get what you’re feeling, but I’m just really worried about this place and where we’re headed.

  • Hoo boy the Alitos do not come off well. If the justice were true to his oath and had any respect left for his office, instead of staying silent he would have interjected and said something like, “thanks for the chat, you are completely entitled to your opinion. Isn’t our show on Martha-Ann? You folks have a good evening.” Not too hard, really.

Also, anyone else notice this subtle dig at the Post for burying their story?

When speaking to a Washington Post reporter (per a story published last week), that same day, Martha-Ann shouted that the flag was “an international signal of distress.”
