  • Absolutely it can.

But Redhat is a huge contributor

The biggest threat that Linux faces isn’t from Microsoft or other companies. Over the past 30 years, I’ve noticed it is actually from the community. I’ve seen so many cases where the community blows things out of proportion and scares off developers. It sucks. Linux and open source would be so much more successful if we didn’t constantly make open source toxic for companies

Poor people like Lennart Poettering get shat on constantly too. He could get a much better paying job

Even right now… VSCode. It’s open source and MIT. People are STILL crapping on Microsoft and saying stuff like “oh wait for the enshittification”, instead of thanking them, or encouraging them for more

It’s bonkers… There’s so much negative reinforcement out there that it’s scaring people away

  • Err… Those are bad examples.

Skype was bad before microsoft lol. If anything, Microsoft actually made it more usable… Skype was NEVER good lol

And very few people in the real world have an issue with Github. The evidence is that you’ll notice projects aren’t moving away from it, and Github is growing fast. I found there’s a small number of people making 99.99% of the noise (like the first main “enshiffication” post on Lemmy, which was mainly pointing towards comments made by a developer without many commits and as a open source project, they weren’t even paying for github). If you want a good example, Sourceforge would be a better one (although, it’s possible even they cleaned up their act)

Nobody would call VS Code bloated or anything. There are some things I don’t like, but i have tried so many IDE’s in the past 20 years, and can honestly say that VS Code survived because its hugely easier, and it’s actually a high quality product. Anyone who has tried stuff like Atom or Eclipse will attest to that (Eclipse was great at the time, but was painfully slow)

I did see a post about a rust one upcoming that did seem interesting, but its really just a slightly faster version of VS Code (and VS Code itself is no slouch).

  • Half of what you’re writing isn’t really true.

You’re likely assuming a lot of that.

Everyone knows that Oracle was the reason. Sorry, but they basically bragged that they stole the latest rhel source code and added an unbreakable kernel. And they purposely targeted Redhats customers with support by stealing their work.

In other words, their only other choice was to basically close shop… Oracle has been screwing them for years,

Also, sorry, but is it disrespectful when a company drops a project? We could make that same comment about every project. Also, CentOS is open source, as you said, so anyone can download it . They didn’t.

You’re also likely assuming they’re not pouring a huge amount of resources into it too

The perfect current example of rhel improving Linux is pipewire. They are literally unfucking Linux one component at a time in large chunks. It’s insane that people here are treating them so badly.

In fact, the community has no problems mistreating Linux developers over tiny things, which is why developers like myself which have been badly attacked in the past have stopped contributing

  • To be blunt…

Redhat contributes a huge amount to the community.

The only ones who think they’re misstepping or whatever are just making noise and likely aren’t even using RHEL.

I don’t think people realise exactly how far their contributions go for usability, and getting rid of Redhat of actually a really bad thing for Linux.

I’d even argue, the only people complaining about this likely don’t contribute anything to Linux anyway…

The only thing they did is stop oracle pulling their repo, rebranding and selling support slightly cheaper.

  • He was possibly even shot by a right wing voter.

He’s promised suffering at a minimum to women and immigrants (so the majority of the population).

He’s raped women and I suspect he’ll fire the last few supreme justice judges who don’t agree with him. Don’t forget, his only running to avoid prison at this time. They’re the only ones who can override him and put him in prison

But even any sensible ring wing person doesn’t want a dictator in charge. It just riles up the crazies who still believes him

Getting shot doesn’t give anyone any real reason to vote for him. Only the marginal population.

I am still silently confident Biden will win, but i now his safety is seriously at risk, and I suspect this will now end in civil war during election

I guess Trump will have to decide how much golf he wants to play from now on. I can’t imagine secret service wants him standing in an open field anymore
