I think this neglects one of the bigger causes here: funding. Almost all universities no longer receive a significant share of their income directly from the government or donors. They instead are funded though tuition (which are often paid by guaranteed loans).

This swaps the incentives quite a bit. The customer is the student, rather than the elite or the government. In particular, if you provide a less useful CV item for the student, then they go elsewhere. Lots of your examples of leading would likely degrade a CV.

It’s hard to get funding to start a college. Especially with the NSF dysfunctional. If you’ve got a government with substantial surplus, do consider trying a new uni (or changing what they give to universities and capping tuition).

(Separately, much of the tools and software have been centralized because it really has become cheaper at an organization level. No need for much support staff and liability coverage.)

Struggling to get my dev environment setup on nixos. A bit of a tutorial gap for LEAN4 and sagemath in particular.

No autohotkey style automation, in particular I miss hotkeys that would move the mouse. Kmonad has done a ok job of rebinding keys, though it doesn’t convert a held key into multiple inputs afaik.

Some VR games on steam are also a bit rough, possibly a graphics driver problem? (Though I would be just as happy for a Linux optimized resonite competitor.)

While I had similar concerns, I do think about this a fair bit now. A nontrivial math problem was proved by Aristotle (in Lean, a proof assistant, so we’re relatively sure it’s correct). Alpha Evolve then generalized. GPT pro did some writing and visualization work.

It’s basically the quality of work I aspire to. Slightly cheaper, and substantially faster. Not the strongest PhD, but a solid graduate student.
