Highlights: The White House on Monday issued veto threats against two GOP-led House appropriations bills expected to come up for a vote this week as lawmakers seek to avoid a government shutdown in November.
The House bills would cut Department of Transportation funding by $7 billion compared to fiscal 2023 levels, $1.2 billion from HUD funding compared to 2023 levels, and nearly $4 billion from EPA funding compared to 2023 levels.
In both cases, the White House argued the bills put forward by Republicans in the House undercut an agreement reached by administration officials and GOP lawmakers in May on spending as part of negotiations to raise the debt limit.

That’s cute that they think any of them care about that, and that half of them won’t call it an outright lie because their base will believe it.
The important thing is the GQP doesn’t have the votes in either chamber to overcome a veto. And passing legislation that they know will be veto’d is the same as doing nothing.
It’s worse than nothing since they’re wasting time and resources.
But that’s the point.
Maybe get rid of the fake-ass TSA. Those security-theater police academy rejects serve absolutely no purpose at all and cost us 10 billion a year.
Whoa whoa whoa - those x-rays and cavity searches are the closest thing I get to healthcare.
Maybe get rid of the fake-ass TSA.
I heard on the radio this morning that… Philadelphia’s airport, I believe, is now allowing passengers to have people wait at the gate with them again. We haven’t seen that in decades, it gives me hope the TSA will one day be a thing of the past.
You’ve always been able to get a gate pass if you’re assisting another traveler.
Not assisting, just hanging out with them until they leave.
Not sure on the requirements for everyone else, but my kids often fly alone and I take them to the gate and just chill for an hour or two.
Honestly, keep paying them, but have their work severly reduced: life mobility program that doesn’t negatively affect people as much. Sunset after like a year or 2 when a lot of the people at TSA can have used that free money to get into other jobs and still not hassle me in my flights
Transition them from passenger annoyance to passenger assistance.
That too, our current system is obnoxious, and seemingly doesn’t actually give us better security.
Why not cut Homeland Security and DOD spending? There is so much bloat there.
Of course, any representative to bring that up would instantly be called unpatriotic.
same reason why TSA is not cut …
if anything happens after … it will be political suicide
So we might as well just keep shoveling money into the bottomless pit that is the MIC…
The equivalent to a parent never letting their kids do anything because something might happen.
It’s funny how MAGA bullshit is just warmed over Tea Party bullshit

DoT has seen an explosive increase in budget by 66% since 2019. I am not convinced that a 3% cut to stem the deficit is devastating.
I don’t deny that American transportation and logistics are aging and need reform but this economic and high interest climate doesn’t seem like the best time to go all in.
politics is a game of give and take. you have to be willing to barter what you want for what you need. honestly thought that Biden, a career politician, would have come to accept that by now.
But do Republicans understand that?
it would appear not. time will tell I suppose
Why would Republicans understand something they have never had taught to them? Democrats don’t compromise with Republicans; they capitulate and order their voters to be happy with it.
Did you read the part where this violates the previous agreement? Agreeing to not increase spending in some areas, despite inflation, is already a big sacrifice.
