President Putin Turns 74
On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin turned 74, prompting numerous foreign leaders to congratulate him by phone. Putin, who was born in St. Petersburg in 1952 and has led Russia since 1999, held phone conversations with leaders from the post-Soviet space, including the Belarusian, Armenian, Kyrgyz and Tajik presidents.
Chinese leader Xi Jinping had already congratulated him in advance on Tuesday, and Putin is expected to receive a phone call from U.S. President Donald Trump, who has expressed his willingness to address the possible outbreak of pneumonic plague in Siberia.
The Kremlin also announced that, at the conclusion of his talks with his counterparts, Putin will chair a meeting of Russia’s Security Council amid an escalation of attacks between the Russian and Ukrainian armies. Following the 2020 constitutional reform, Putin will be eligible to run for president for a sixth time in 2030 and again in 2036.
