I used ErsatzTV for a while and it was neat. A little resource hungry, and a little fiddly to get everything set up, but really awesome once it was up and going. Integrated nicely into Jellyfin too.

Now if only any of my users would have ever once touched it… that would have been cool too.

    • if you have a moment, can you expand on the appeal of a “fake” channel built out of your own media library? because i guess i don’t really get it.

do you miss the passive consumption of media, where you just turn it on and something is going?

Speaking for myself, yeah that’s the goal. I’ve actually had the exact same idea of recreating an adult swim lineup, but jellyfin only lets you shuffle within a show, so you still have to make the choice of show. This would let you choose a suite of shows and it would randomize the lineup, and you could insert the adult swim bumps for some variety.

If I had known about this software years ago, I would’ve made a Disney/nick jr competitor channel for my nibling that would’ve grouped the themes of all her shows (sesame street, Daniel tiger, bluey, etc) so that each week would have been a consistent theme (like sharing, cleaning up after themselves, thinking about other people’s feelings, etc) to help them get the same lessons from a variety of sources.

As they got older I could’ve made them more of their own channels to give them a selection of stuff to view from YouTube and Netflix to prevent them from being raised by the algorithm (or encouraging binging/doomscrolling) while still letting them keep somewhat in touch with the same media as their friends.

        • thanks, that is an interesting idea… basically curating media to make it easy for someone else in the household to access passive entertainment with guardrails and organization.

i could also see this for like an elderly parent who can’t be bothered with going through an entire catalogue.
