I commissioned Topsie Turvy a couple of years ago to draw a character I developed, named Shizuka Mizoguchi. Shizuka is a former yakuza who eventually retired from the organization to manage a movie theater; she joined a yakuza family to help pay for a friend’s medical expenses and college tuition. She rose through the family’s ranks, eventually serving as a bodyguard to the patriarch; when she announced her intentions to retire, the patriarch allowed her, on the condition that he provide some seed money for the theater.
