This is very unfortunate. The EU is taking on very many refugees and immigrants. They have a very serious problem with their aging population and balance of payments difficulties on their safety nets and social programs. The Ukrainian population is relatively close to the social and cultural norms within the EU and has been fighting with EU funding ostensibly for the safety of the EU. Originally the revolution there and war stems from the desire to integrate into European institutions and indeed into Europe. It seems quite callous and cynical to not let those remaining populations who wish to immigrate to the EU to do so freely. If membership of Ukraine to the EU can cause a world war between nuclear armed powers it seems certain that simply allowing the population who has done everything and made every sacrifice to become part of Europe to do so would not have such a large scale war outcome.
