Sure, but i think the gradient of punishment and level of forgiveness extended should correlate with who they are, where they are from, how they came up, why they joined, etc.
Not everyone gets to be born white with nice parents, you guys take that for granted. If you were born this girl you wouldnt be magically more ethical, more morally sound or more intelligent than her.

The majority choose those paths rather than becoming a solider of the empire

Perhaps not and without getting into nature vs nurture, I could just as easily have ended up one of the majority of people born into her same circumstances who did not join up be enforcers of empire, and forged a life path that does not contain contributing to mass slaughter of innocents

I know for a fact that there are many many many poor people who try to join but get turned away because they are 1) Too fat 2) Too stupid 3) Too unhealthy 4) Criminal Records. 5) Drugs

When they give the select few with courage to join, they dont mean that, they mean those who werent already harvested by the US.
They dont join out of a sense of comradery or anything like that its just the imperial core squeezed everything out of its population and is left with a more narrow parameter.
