Yeah he just kinda slips that one in there and most kids these days would never get it.
I have to wonder whether “most” kids nowadays really are unfamiliar with Mr. Ed, at least of kids whose parents and/or grandparents were universally aware of the character. I get the impression that the Mr. Ed theme song especially has sort of outlived the show itself in pop culture, with some parents — even some parents who haven’t personally seen the show itself — teaching the song to their kids. Though I guess knowing of Mr. Ed’s existence in general is different from automatically registering that the “Ed” in that Emo Phillips bit is specifically supposed to be a Mr. Ed reference, when it’s so subtle.
Now personally, what I’d never get in a million years is that the “Revolutionary Marxism-Leninism-Maoism-Gonzalo Thought” bit from OP was based on an Emo Phillips bit. I just thought it was a viral tweet that wasn’t based on anything in particular! My zoomer ass has heard of Mr. Ed but not Emo Phillips, evidently. So thanks for sharing the original, it has broadened my cultural literacy.
