For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963), a slapstick comedy epic about several bumbling rival factions who race across California to claim a buried $850,000 stash, following the dying words of a reckless motorist who they all watched kick the bucket. The starts include Spencer Tracy, Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Buddy Hackett, Phil Silvers, Ethel Merman, and Mickey Rooney, among others. Pretty much every silly situation imaginable happens along the way; this is pretty much the Gone with the Wind (1939) of slapstick. This was the direct inspiration for The Cannonball Run (1981) and Rat Race (2002), among others. Director Stanley Kramer is better-known for Judgment at Nuremberg (1961) and Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (1967), but this was his biggest box-office hit.

After that is Electric Dragon 80000V (2001), an action-sci-fi-fantasy about a boxer-guitarist with the power to shoot electric blasts from his fists. He duels his archrival, a half-wizard, half-Buddha cyborg, as the two decide Tokyo is not big enough for the two of them. Over-the-top live-action-anime antics ensue. Director Gakuryu Ishii is best-known for the superpowered-schoolgirl arthouse-sci-fi August in the Water (1995), which we previously watched. This is one of his better-regarded works, so let’s give it a short.
