For this Friday Movie Night, first up is Comrades: Almost a Love Story (1996), a Hong Kong romance/drama about a guy who moves to Hong Kong from mainland China in search of wealth so that he can marry his girlfriend back home. Uh-oh, he barely sets foot in the city when he meets another lady (Maggie Cheung), and a tryst ensues. She’s street-smart, and he’s just a naïve country bumpkin; are they nevertheless the perfect match for each other? I guess we’ll find out. This is by far the best-known and best-regarded work of director Peter Chan Ho-Sun; he is a one-hit wonder.

After that is 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple (2026), the follow-up to 28 Years Later (2025), which we watched two weeks ago. It follows a teenager’s initiation into a gang of Jimmy-Savile-lookalike Satan worshippers, who have cast off all morals and seek only to cause chaos amidst the zombie apocalypse. They seek to create the eponymous temple from human remains, but the protagonist decides to defect from the group and attempt to understand the psychology of an alpha-male zombie instead. Director is Nai DaCosta, who is otherwise best-known for Candyman (2021) and, uhh, The Marvels (2023). Excellent reviews for this all around, so let’s give it a whirl.
