Looks like it’s some Organic Maps / Maps.me fork: https://www.comaps.app/news/2025-05-29/ITs-FOSS-NEWS--Organic-Maps-Forked-Over-Governance-Concerns-CoMaps-is-Born/
It is. They split because of some leadership drama. I don’t know the details.
The Open Letter to Organic Maps Shareholders from April provides some details.
Thanks
The Organic Maps shareholders closed parts of the code, added Kayak advertising and there is a risk that they will sell the project for their own profit.
I think the key issue was lack of transparency around donations from the OrganicMaps owners. Article summary: https://www.comaps.app/news/2025-05-29/ITs-FOSS-NEWS--Organic-Maps-Forked-Over-Governance-Concerns-CoMaps-is-Born/ The open letter that startet CoMaps: https://openletter.earth/open-letter-to-organic-maps-shareholders-a0bf770c
The Organic Maps project was advertised as community-driven, but shareholders were making a number of decisions without community input, and without community being aware decisions are being made. While the use of donations is concerning, it wasn’t the main problem. When people contribute to the project so that it can be for the entire community, but the shareholders are open to selling the contributors’ work for their profit, that becomes problematic. Maps.me was sold and it added paid subscriptions and a crypto wallet, which destroyed the entire experience. And it appears Organic Maps risks the same problem.
Its already better than Organic Maps. The latest update has this
save built routes as tracks
which is so good for doing long bike tours :)Is CoMaps going to merge commits from OM in the future? Or is the development completely parallel?
It does merge commits from OM at the moment.
Installed and in daily use! Thanks comaps team ❤️
Why can’t I find it?
It’s because it has antifeatures you have filtered out. I believe it was “tethered network services” that made comaps appear in search results
I still don’t see it…
I can see it on the website, copy the link and when I open it on the phone it says app not found. Is your local repository cache up to date? Pull down to update.
That was it. Thank you :)
Update the repos in the app
Downloaded and switched! 🙌
👏👏👏
I have a problem with map downloads. On the 1st install, out of 6,1 failed, and on the last update, another map failed to download. It just gets stuck and goes really slow and won’t complete, then finally fails after a while. I have to come back after some time to complete downloading.
Is there some kind of request limit 5hat throttles downloads?
Also could it please support Open tracks to view its maps. Sharing maps from Open tracks share menu is imported as bookmarks, which isn’t optimal.
