The BBC has announced the next stage in the expansion of its Whoniverse, a pre-school animation version of its big-selling IP, which just wrapped second season under returned showrunner Russell T. Davies. (…)
Disney, which co-produces the Bad Wolf and BBC Studios-produced main version, will not be involved with the animation.
Very interesting…and very light on details. Sounds like this won’t see the light of day for a long time. But sure, DW kids’ show, why not?
Disney not being involved is…telling.
Edit: Radio Times has a little more info:
The series will run for 26 episodes in 2027/2028 and a further 26 episodes in 2028/2029.
Disney is immaterial, even if they changed their mind and renewed their deal. This series will be unconnected to main Doctor Who, RTD or Bad Wolf, and doesn’t form part of that rights package.
When the production company is selected in November, they will be bringing their own creative.
Huh. That’s an unexpectedly complicated rights package. I would have expected Disney to have distribution rights to all new franchise series, or at least first-look rights.
Why? Their contract was for two seasons of Doctor Who and one season of a spin-off, which is now completed.
No-way the BBC would give anyone brand rights. They’re the golden egg.
Oh, I didn’t think for a second that they were “given”.
idc i still miss class. it deserved better :[
