The bad things the Russia is doing now are a continuation of what it has been doing for a century. Accepting that they are in the wrong now would require accepting that they’ve done bad things before. That’s a lot of work, so the mind protects itself from all that thinking.
It’s a subset of them who suffer from the delusion that Russia is still socialist somehow.
