So my wife cracked the screen of her Playdate console. I got a replacement memory LCD (Sharp LS027B7DH01A), but the LCD is mounted with optically clear adhesive directly to a piece of glass which is adhered around the edges to the console’s faceplate.
The glass measures 65.15x41.64mm by 0.65mm thick. Definitely not a standard size. I can’t find anywhere to buy glass so thin and so large.
My first thought was to cut a phone screen protector down to size with a glass cutter. My first attempt failed because the screen protector I bought was actually coated in plastic on both sides. Even if I got a straight cut, I couldn’t find a way to slice through the plastic layers cleanly.
Any ideas on where to find cuttable glass sheets this thin? I could try more screen protectors, but there’s no way to know if they’ll work before buying them.
Contact a manufacturer of 0.65mm thick gorilla glass in custom dimensions and ask for a sample piece to avoid the MOQ.
Yeah, I hit up a few on Alibaba. Even one who can apply the black border on the glass. No responses so far and it’s been a few weeks.
You want to contact the business directly, not through Alibaba or similar. You can also try trade wheel or similar.
Alibaba is talking directly to the manufacturer. At least in my experience. Haven’t heard of trade wheel.
Might be worth your time to email Panic and see if they can send a replacement screen if you haven’t tried that yet
I might. I already emailed them for another project asking what model screen they were using, and they refused to share that info, so I don’t think they’re too open to hardware hobbyists.
The other project was adding a light. There is a vendor that offers a front-light for that model, but it’s like $60 and the result is too thick to fit in the stock Playdate.
