In which situation does it make sense for Firefox to call for it instead of you yourself? This seems like bloatware to me.

Linux@programming.dev•A truce in the Manjaro governance struggle
0·3 months agoJust drop Manjaro, people. We have CachyOS already. EndeavourOS if you please. Move on from that historical mess!

Privacy@lemmy.ml•GrapheneOS calls on privacy focused app developers to boycott European Unified Attestation
51·3 months agoI started reading the full argument, and correct me if I am wrong, but don’t they always start with a defendable idea and end up simply sounding crazy as hell when they start talking unrelated shit about other projects?

Free and Open Source Software@beehaw.org•I accidentally became a FOSS maintainer and all I got was this lousy new perspective on librarianship
2·5 months agoOh, god, I thought I was the only one who fucking hates stale bots!!
As a maintainer, you should handle all issues, and yes, maybe classify them into “low importance” or even close issues where not enough data could be provided. But letting them dissapear under the rug??
What the fuck? That feels like you don’t give a shit. Someone made an effort to report something. Someone cared. Keep it in check! Be human!
I believe these stale bots are put by people who want to keep their issues at a low number so they look “better maintained” or something. Awful behaviour.

Free and Open Source Software@beehaw.org•Histomat of F/OSS: We should reclaim LLMs, not reject them
31·5 months agoI absolutely agree. For me, a very similar thing can be said for art. It should be okay to scrap free and open source data, and copyleft art and make whatever you want with it. That is why I put a copyleft license on things! Just release the code, and acknowledge the source.
If you waste your time shitting on LLMs and AI models as a concept… You are totally missing the point. These are useful tools. Not as useful as the oligarchs want you to believe. But they are useful. And people find value in them. This is the reality.
You should focus on who controls and monopolises these concepts, not the concept itself.

Free and Open Source Software@beehaw.org•New FreeTube fork with Save video playback speed setting for each channel separately
51·5 months agoIs there a fork that has Sponsorblock submissions available?
That’s my biggest downside with FreeTube, the dev is anti-sponsorblock, he just added basic sponsorblock reading because it was too obvious everyone wanted it.
The data has already been scrapped, processed, categorized and indexed. This is quite literally true.
Do not worry about it, and simply try to not give them much from now on.
Also filling the internet with junk is how our best ever collective project dies. Don’t be a part of that.
I use Android because I want to install the apps that I fucking want. The launcher is the place where I spend very little time. Stock Android launcher is generally fine for me.

Free and Open Source Software@beehaw.org•Is there a way I can make my XMPP (Conversations) messages synced to my desktop?
1·1 year agoI do use Signal. Everyone should have Signal for telephone contacts. But for the other stuff… I’d rather use a decentralized system.

Free and Open Source Software@beehaw.org•Is there a way I can make my XMPP (Conversations) messages synced to my desktop?
1·1 year agoActually, I’ve tried DeltaChat, and it does seem to do everything right. It still needs some features, but it’s advancing fast and it’s already pretty usable, and device sync is amazing.
In terms of Matrix, yeah it’s not the best experience right now, but I guess it can still be fixable. XMPP has just too much technical debt and fragmentation, it seems.

Free and Open Source Software@beehaw.org•Is there a way I can make my XMPP (Conversations) messages synced to my desktop?
1·1 year agoAside from that, it makes sense that it took Signal a while to get the sync feature because Signal ONLY stores messages locally. XMPP stores them on the server. I would expect to be able to access that information from anywhere. What’s the point of doing so anyway? Let me at least import the keys so I can unlock those messages. But it seems like you can’t.

Free and Open Source Software@beehaw.org•Is there a way I can make my XMPP (Conversations) messages synced to my desktop?
2·1 year agoThen losing all your project’s history, while also forcing you to stick to a single, unofficial (because there is no official) XMPP client for the rest of your life because there are no standardized multiplatform backups. I’m sorry but no.
You may call it a feature. I call it a huge fat bug.

Free and Open Source Software@beehaw.org•Is there a way I can make my XMPP (Conversations) messages synced to my desktop?
3·1 year agoThat is very sad. I’ll be migrating out of XMPP. It’s intolerable that one cannot recover messages that are still there; or that even moving from one client to another implies you lose all of your history.

In any case, I wonder why Taler has not made it a point that they are (or could) be a payment system for the digital euro.

19·1 year agoI have seen 0 articles relating GNU Taler with the digital Euro, and I am very worried this incredible project will end nowhere. Because the digital Euro is definitely coming and that would be the moment to put Taler to work.

What always freaks me out is people considering their government worse than the likes of Meta, Palantir, Google, Microsoft… At least you can vote (hopefully) for a different government. The problem is when the companies are able to buy governments, like USA is.
