I feel awful for the driver. I also drive for work, albeit just a Tacoma. I’m pretty sure it I hit a pedestrian, short of them jumping in front of me, I’d be losing my job. We should hold ourselves to a higher standard regarding driving and especially safety. That said, I do not want the guy to lose his job. BUT, yes, after consulting with a couple trusted friends, one of them the one who got me into communism, and was advised to sue the pants off the company. So I called a lawyer. The truth is I can’t afford not to sue, as I will be out of work for potentially months. I have a 80 hours of leave available to me once I go on official medical leave, and I have short-term disability insurance. But both if those things cover 40 hours a week (the STDI only a portion of that, iirc), and I work and budget for 45 to 50. I’ve got no savings. Things are going to get financially dicey pretty quickly.

I just came out of knee surgery today for a fractured tibial plateau. The surgery part was fine lol. Check back once I’m in recovery 😂

I’ve been at my current job a year. Very much proven myself. No callouts, I’m always early. I am always down to work late and help out my coworkers on their routes. The other day I was having some tummy trouble and simply told my manager I was going to bang out my work and head out early because I wasn’t feeling too hot, without giving any details. He was giving me a bunch of friction. I understand that he deals with bullshit all the time. But I am not the guy. One of your best tells you he needs to knock off a little early, after finishing his work for the day, you should say alright man have a good one! Anyway I told him I’d really prefer to go home and blow up my own toilet if it was all the same to him. Apparently that was enough.

My kitchen has a little dining table that’s physically attached to the wall, and on the other side of that wall is the air conditioner closet. Anything you put on the table will quiver like that. Perhaps it’s something like that? That said, I live in a place without earthquakes and have my whole life so I don’t know what I’m talking about.

I think I came up with a new (at least to me) way of explaining what LLMs actually do. You know how when you’re listening to a song you haven’t heard before, you can normally hum along even though you don’t actually know it. You can do this because you’ve heard so much music before, and there are just patterns and such that you begin to intuit. That’s all that’s happening, just in a less beautiful way. Now I feel kind of bad bringing music into this.

I’m glad you’re both here! I used to joke that I needed to hurry up and become a talented musician so I could join the 27 club. I turn 35 in like three weeks. I never expected to be this old. I did not prepare.

Turns out those types of people just love that shit. I definitely don’t work a desk job, and they still throw us all in a room every couple months and lie to us about being a family.

I’m certainly not here to speak on anything, really. But I will say as a mostly passive observer I have been concerned for you. Hopefully others’ concern is also out of care and not malice.

I very much considered joining that. I love language, but have never fully learned a second. The thought of learning another alphabet is daunting, when I already know most of the Russian one. I’m turning 35 and the elasticity isn’t what it once was. My three languages of choice would be Russian, Chinese (Mandarin? I’m the least educated here), and Arabic. They all require a new alphabet. Irish (Gaelic?) is the fourth, but the first three I feel have the most utility. Irish is one I am drawn to by some misguided cultural nonsense. I’m adopted. Idk who I come from. But I’m a white guy with a red beard and red highlights, I know I have some Cherokee ( a lot of us in the southeast of the US do) and that’s it. And that’s 1/8 at most. But my bio father’s family is from Appalachia. So whether it’s warranted or not, I feel a pull to Irish culture.

Good Russian learning resources? I took on the task of learning Russian like 18 years ago, an got so far as to be able to transliterate most of the alphabet. I forget some of the letters I get very frustrated watching some people play GeoGuessr because the sign will say Yekaterinburg 50km but it’s in Cyrillic so they can’t read it and just pick two random ass points in Russia.

Anyone have good resources? I was talking to a friend about all of this and realized I’d really like to continue learning the language.

Yes! It’s pretty interesting. I would definitely try an “old” banana but suspect I wouldn’t like them much.
