It makes sense from a survival standpoint, but it’s still grotesque. I learned that fact when I stumbled upon a den in my backyard. The mom bolted and left the babies there. I kept an eye on it, hoping the mom would come back, but when I checked again the next day they were all gone. I checked to see if the babies grow up fast enough to actually leave that quickly, and this is what I learned.
