If we’re going to be pedantic, let’s do it correctly.

Even with the blinds shut, a space heater will emit a surprisingly large amount of radio waves (mine actually disrupts USB devices with a small EMP when it turns on, and anyone with an RTL-SDR can tell you those 50 Hz harmonics are rough). Some of those radio waves will penetrate the walls/blinds and a tiny fraction might escape the atmosphere and head off into space. From there some will find their way to interstellar space and potentially drift “forever” (well, until the heat death of the universe or whichever theory you subscribe to; I think at that point saying “the photon never got converted into heat energy” is a good enough approximation).

  • Assuming you like eating chicken, when is it wrong to pair chicken with vegetables? I made a vegetable-mushroom-chicken soup last week and it was delish. Whether chicken is or isn’t a vegetable is an academic concern, not a culinary one.

Try putting mushrooms or chicken in the sangria however and you’ll be rightfully prosecuted for crimes against humanity.

  • ??? Of course you do. Investors don’t just buy their way into hypothetical future profits, they buy control over the company. The specifics depend, whether it’s voting shares or the looming threat of debt collection, but the courts will 100 % enforce investors’ right to demand things from companies.

Furthermore the idea that publicly traded companies have some kind of obligation to make as much money as quickly as possible is a reddit-born myth. Shareholders will bring in a CEO, who will be tasked to do whatever and can be fired from the shareholders at any time. Grievous mismanagement and intentional damage can expose a CEO to legal action, just like intentionally destroying tools can expose a worker to legal action. But a CEO acting in good faith has no other obligation than to fulfill the tasks asked of them by shareholders. The problem is that goes wrong when large shareholders plan to sell their shares and need the numbers to look a little better to sell a little higher. But this phenomenon absolutely happens with PE as well – in fact it’s arguably way worse because publicly traded companies at least have legal obligations of financial transparency. Private shareholders can do whatever the fuck they want, including secretly selling their shares to Evil Inc. for them to strip the company for parts and not a single employee has the right to even know who the majority shareholder even is, nervermind what their plan is.

  • That’s worse. You see how that’s worse, right?

The entire premise of this accursed property is “structural change is definitionally impossible and evil-natured people cannot be helped so let’s see how Batman brutally maims victims of this system to defeat the villain-of-the-day”. This is such a profoundly repulsive ideology to me. It’s not about the in-universe justifications, it’s about the horrible, awful, despicable themes of the stories that glorify hyper-individualism and completely discredit democracy, civic institutions, and community.

The in-universe explanations were just tacked on to those core reactionary ideals. The writers didn’t stumble on a cursed city, they invented a cursed city to justify their need for vigilantism and violence to be the only rational answers to society’s ills.

  • I’ve never had anyone suggest the success I had in life was in any way related to someone wanting my dick in them no.

You’re making it sound like this post is discussing pretty privilege. It’s not. It’s making a crass, misogynistic “joke” which hinges on the false implication that a woman is doing sex work for her success. But you already knew that and are just pretending otherwise. And if you think that misogyny is acceptable because it’s “how the world works”, I would not-so-kindly ask you to fuck right back off to 4chan or the fox news comment section or wherever else you incels congregate these days.

  • That’s a very charitable interpretation. Anon is a literal incel, he made a sexist joke, and I really don’t think he (or you) has ever watched one of pokimane’s streams because they’re aggressively non-sexual. There are plenty of actual sex workers on twitch if that’s your thing.

Has pokimane had her share of weirdos over the years? Sure, but it’s really not that many people in absolute numbers and spreading naked incel propaganda is really fucking icky to me. Incel jokes aren’t okay even if it’s “humor”. It normalizes this extreme misogyny, even if you say “it’s okay we’re laughing at anon”.

  • I understand greentexts are misogynistic by nature, but wtf is wrong with this entire fucking website that this shit is what pops up first. The entire “joke” hinges on the idea that that woman’s entire worth is tied into being pretty. This is not even casual sexism, that’s ranked competitive sexism.

Also going by the comments some advanced morons here seem to unironically think that is actually how it works. Per twitch’s own leaked financials pokimane did not make more money than her male counterparts (who no-one ever accused of abusing their pretty privilege). But she’s a woman so of course her merit has to be scrutinized and her success has to be attributed to men. I suppose the idea that she has a large female audience has never even crossed the minds of the quadruple-chinned gremlins who upvote this garbage.

So do Muslims. Jesus is to the Quran and the Book of Mormon what Moses is to the New Testament. A recognized prophet, but not the prophet because god apparently felt the need to send a new one down to earth to clarify a few things.

I don’t personally give a shit as I’m not even remotely religious, but the only reason Mormons pretend to be a Christian sect is because it’s politically convenient to them as a US religious minority to “blend in” better. The more you learn about their beliefs, the more you realize they might be further apart from Christianity than Christianity is from Judaism.

  • Counterpoint: Yes, parse don’t validate, but CLIs should not be dealing with dependency management.

    I love Python’s argparse because:

    • It’s “Parse, don’t validate” (even supports FileType as a target)
    • It enforces or strongly encourages good CLI design
      • Required arguments should in most situations be positional arguments, not flags. It’s curl <URL> not curl --url <URL>.
      • Flags should not depend on each other. That usually indicates spaghetti CLI design. Don’t do server --serve --port 8080 and server --reload with rules for mix-and-matching those, do server serve --port 8080 and server reload with two separate subparsers.
      • Mutually exclusive flags sometimes make sense but usually don’t. Don’t do --xml --json, do -f [xml|json].
      • This or( pattern of yours IMO should always be replaced by a subparser (which can use inheritance!). As a user the options’ data model should be immediately intuitive to me as I look at the --help and having mutually exclusive flags forces the user to do the extra work of dependency management. Don’t do server --env prod --auth abc --ssl, do server serve prod --auth abc --ssl where prod is its own subparser inheriting from AbstractServeParser or whatever.

Thinking of CLI flags as a direct mapping to runtime variables is the fundamental mistake here I think. A CLI should be a mapping to the set(s) of behavior(s) of your application. A good CLI may have mandatory positional arguments but has 0 mandatory flags, 0 mutually exclusive flags, and if it implements multiple separate behaviors should be a tree of subparsers. Any mandatory or mutually exclusive flags should be an immediate warning that you’re not being very UNIX-y in your CLI design.

  • Counter-point: AFAIK “fecal matter contamination” usually means “we found some ecoli”. A bacteria that is completely ubiquitous and almost always harmless unless you manage to ingest a significant amount or rub them into your eyes. It can be a useful general cleanliness indicator, for example if high concentrations of ecoli are measured in a body of water it probably means raw sewage made its way there, and you should be worried about the things that aren’t ecoli. However you’re not particularly likely to catch cholera or dysentery from your own sponge.

Furthermore sponges aren’t meant to be clean per se. They’re meant to be mechanically abrasive, so that all the impurities are detached from the surface you’re cleaning. Those impurities then bind to the soap molecules which prevent them from clinging to surfaces, and therefore allow them to be easily washed away when rinsing.
It does not matter much if the sponge was dirty because the bacteria from the sponge will rinse away alongside the bacteria from the item you’re cleaning. Just make sure to soap, rinse, and dry things properly and wash your hands after handling a sponge.

  • Don’t make the mistake of starting from the “enlightened centrist” hypothesis that everyone’s a little bit right and working backwards to a justification why an absolute moral position is supposedly hypocritical.

This isn’t about my feelings, this is about a right to self-actualization.

And you clearly didn’t understand my point if you are getting hung up on this idea of gender stereotypes. I could be 150 cm with humongous pendulous tits, hair down to my BBL, a miniskirt and a crop-top with my nipples poking through, 30 cm stillettos, Marilyn Monroe’s face, enough makeup to smother a small child, and the brattiest attitude you’ve ever seen in your life. That still would not give anyone the right to be sexist. You’re the one bringing sexism into this like it’s somehow inextricable from the experience of gender.

  • I’ve been using the AI to help me with some beginner level rust compilation checks recently.

I never once got an accurate solution, but half the time it gave me a decent enough keyword to google or broken pattern to fix myself. The other half of the time it kept giving me back my own code proudly telling me it fixed it.

Don’t worry though, AGI is right around the corner. Just one more trillion dollars bro. One trillion and we’ll provide untold value to the shareholders bro. Trust me bro.

  • Fallacies upon fallacies.

The right to self-actualization is not equivalent to hatred nor an enforced social order of arbitrary and repressive rules. You don’t get to pull the “it’s just feelings” card to defend bigotry.

Gender characteristics are not the same thing as stereotypes and either way none of that is inherently sexist. Characteristics just are. The weighted sum of gender characteristics is how we perceive gender outwardly – which is not necessarily correlated to internal perception of gender. Sexism only happens because some people use that outwards perception of gender to make ill judgment and enforce unfair rules. That’s on them, not the person being perceived.

  • Can’t corroborate from my personal perspective. If anything it seems that the EU proving to be entirely toothless and fundamentally unwilling to do anything other than fold completely flat for Trump has emboldened the industry reliance on US public clouds for upcoming projects.

Now I don’t work on the business side so I can’t speak to exact customer pressure/feedback, but what am I supposed to say to a project manager who defaults to Azure/AWS for hosting a new product? It’s more convenient and reliable than the alternatives, and there is no structural risk to that decision given that the EU would sooner get rid of the GDPR than admit that user data isn’t secure on US servers.

At this point I almost feel like I should wear a tinfoil hat to suggest using an indigenous public cloud provider.
