Short Eared Owls are able to fly tremendous distances, so they can turn up in some very surprising places.

The coracoid is an important structure that resists the extreme forces applied to the chest while flying. With a damaged coracoid, the chest will compress the lungs and the wing bones will strike the body, so they end up not being able to generate lift.

I had been feeling the same thing in Eastern Pennsylvania. Used to see lots of both, but last few years the lightning bugs were hardly noticeable and I hadn’t seen a rabbit in quite a bit when they used to be a regular sight in the neighborhood. But the last week or 2 there have been some nice lightning bug shows, though not as great as when I was a kid, and I’ve notices some bunnies grazing by the entrance to my road again.

I’ve started looking at some of the names on my posts for kicks, and I’m really excited to see people checking on what I’m sharing every day, even if they don’t talk. Even if you didn’t leave a comment, I see you at least stopped in. Some of you have some greatly creative names, so I hope you do decide to chat someday!

I don’t think he’d want the job, but he would do it were he asked and give it 110%. He’s no nonsense, a facts-based decision maker, and he listens to people’s issues and makes fair decisions if it’s what you want to hear or not. He’s also not too full of himself to admit when he’s been wrong. He seeks out experts on matters outside of his experience and respects their opinions. He loves his country and looks to do right by those that entrust him with a job.

He would also probably be unfortunately remembered as a terrible president a la Jimmy Carter, as he’d likely trust a number of people he shouldn’t to keep their word, he’d be too compromising for a lot of people, and I don’t think people would like his “lack of personality” they’d get from his public persona. I think Hank would be a top-notch cabinet member though! I would totally support him for any of a number of different ones.

I’ve definitely learned more about owls here than almost anywhere else!

I scrolled the stream a bit, and the one was doing some good gular fluttering, essentially the owl version of panting, but throat movement instead of tongue flapping.

This frigatebird readily shows where the gular is located:

Beautiful! The recessed eyes make them still feel a bit intimidating even if the owls are on the smaller side. ☺️

You are correct, there is no mistaking the one can from the other! The Southern’s bubbling call was my favorite.

I stared at more pictures and still can’t tell them apart. One may be darker, but with every pic having different lighting, I feel that’s not the best thing to go by. I thought the Northern had more white on the belly, but then other pics seem to have a stripped belly.

Yikes! I read the summary and watched a review. And the dog isn’t even the creepiest thing in the movie! 😮

Oh, I wasn’t bothered or anything, just joking with you.

I will typically include any info I do get, plus I’ll throw in any context I feel might be necessary. I’ve never given you guys any less of anything. Sometimes I’ll blur a face or remove a paragraph about donations, but that is all.

I don’t know if I’ve taken the time to listen to much WFS sounds. If you find sound or video clips to share that highlight the differences, that would be neat to see, or if there’s some differences in feathering or something else.

The only sound I found recently though was very cute! I checked the votes, as I shared it as a reply to someone else and it looked like you may not have seen it, so here it is!

I have been undecided so long on if I like the look of those dogs or not. They look like a weird accident.

This one is about 2/3 grown up. It looks to have about half its adult feathers. It will be gliding between branches or to the ground building up flight muscles and then it has to climb back up to do it all again until it’s strong enough to fly both directions.

I believe you’re on to something… 🤔

I admire your growing bird nerdery! For some I could probably figure out more specific names for, but a lot of them I just am not always good enough to tell the difference if I don’t have more specifics like where they are, and even then, some ranges will overlap or I just don’t see them enough to feel confident calling which it is. Even things like the Greater and Lesser Sooty Owls are much more significantly different than the WFS and depending on the pose and lighting, I don’t feel confident picking which it is. And with the very recent differentiation of Barn Owl species, even the ornithologists don’t always agree!

I try to give as many specifics as I can, but I worry about screwing up little things like this that might make me seem less accurate about other things, so I tend to play it safe. I’m not an expert, and I am not ready to pretend to be one, even if I might be the owliest Lemming.

If these specifics are important to you, I’d love to see you do a post sometime about them. Anything one of you learns is going to involve a different process than what I’d do, so you’d very likely be able to teach me stuff. I love the video on the foot anatomy of various raptors that FuglyDuck shared yesterday, for example. That was a great contribution that I wouldn’t have thought to find.

Participating here is what lead me to get really passionate about it and to finally volunteer at the rescue instead of telling myself I didn’t have time and it would be a hassle. I have had one other person tell me they’ve volunteered at a place near them that they never even knew existed before I posted about it and they had a wonderful time there, and I’d love to see more of you get involved somehow.

You can always ask me things, but I’d equally love to see what you guys can find as well!
