Programming@programming.dev•Welcome Dan Williams, new LibreOffice Developer focusing on UI/UX 🥳English
2·3 months agoIt could just be me expecting a Sheets or Excel-like interface (I would bet Sheets UI was made specifically to be an easy transfer from Excel), and my brain being stupid when asked to learn a new one (or expecting to learn a new interface too quickly… but then again I don’t usually have trouble with new software and interfaces, so maybe it really is bad UI), but thank you for the reassurance!
Sad for others who might not see improvements because of the macOS focus but still thrilled for myself, because I use LibreOffice on my Mac. This will only bite me too when my Mac kicks the bucket and I have to get a new laptop which I have already decided will run Linux.

Programming@programming.dev•Welcome Dan Williams, new LibreOffice Developer focusing on UI/UX 🥳English
3·3 months agoThrilled. I recently started trying LibreOffice thanks to a friend of mine and I admit that as someone used to Microsoft Office or Google Workspace, I feel like a total idiot always searching up “how to [do something] libreoffice” for things I know how to do already in Office/Workspace (or am confident I could figure out by fooling around in them for a few minutes).
OOP boilerplater except for the Windows bit; trying to slowly move off proprietary software and choose open source when I can

3·3 months agoI’d rather focus more on the people pushing AI or consuming it uncritically (which does include Baby Boomers, yes, but also people all over the age spectrum), and less on age groups we are unable to get out of.
me being upset about generation warring
a bit disheartening that people are doing the generation wars, most of the Baby Boomers I talk to give a shit about the looming climate apocalypse and are concerned about AI; god I hope that if people in my generation do bad things people aren’t inclined to dismiss me on sight as “stupid [andioop’s generational cohort]” especially since there is nothing I can do to change when I was born and thus what generational group I’m placed in. Wasn’t there a whole thing about not making assumptions of people based on demographics we cannot choose? Blame people for choosing the Nazi party, but not for their skin color or gender or sexuality. Why doesn’t that extend to age? Why are all elderly people lumped in with the bad ones at the top? Or is it just “a demographic you choose is okay to bash if positions of power are primarily composed of its members, no matter how many decent people who do not have that level of power share that demographic”? I think a lot of people are doing that and it rubs me super wrong, as a person whose demographics are not traditionally empowered so my perspective cannot just be dismissed as “fragile white male tears” because I am not a white male

Linux@programming.dev•Architecting Consent for AI: Deceptive Patterns in Firefox Link PreviewsEnglish
0·3 months agoI have been specifically thinking about how big tech keeps manufacturing consent for AI, having it on by default and counting accidental undesired uses for “95% of people adopted our AI features!” and all this… glad to see an article that has a title reflecting my thoughts. Looking up manufactured consent for AI usually brings things on how people can use AI to manufacture consent or change narratives, not on “consent to AI” being manufactured itself.

Programming@programming.dev•Linus Torvalds built Git in 10 days - and never imagined it would last 20 yearsEnglish
2·1 year agoMade me curious if Torvalds at least got some reward for his work besides gratitude from people who use his stuff. I’m not sure how credible internet estimates of net worth are but looking up “Linus Torvalds net worth” keeps showing me stuff from $50–$150 million so hey, at least he’s (probably) comfortable. Not exactly Tony Stark superhero territory but if he wasn’t rich enough to sit at home and sleep for the rest of his life if he wanted to I’d probably be upset on his behalf for a bit, before I moved onto the next outrage of the day. Glad to see he’s well-off.

Oof, I guess I’m an AI. As a human who’s not very creative at all your article bodes very poorly for my future in programming. Thanks for your transparency in telling us you are linking to your own blog.

29·1 year agoI’d imagine that you graduate high school at 18 and choose to go to college for the next 4, meaning you graduate as a 22-year old. Add or subtract a year for birthdays that align oddly with the academic year.
On one hand, you should probably indeed take personality quizzes claiming to be scientific online with a grain of salt and actually check if they have that kind of backing.
On another, they’re fun. I am indeed the type of person who takes shitty online quizzes! (And their sometimes-higher-quality sibling, the academic survey. I really miss r/samplesize) And that doesn’t necessarily make me an idiot. I do wonder how to let my fellow quiz takers know that there are a lot of claims to scientific validity out there that just are not true without being a buzzkill, or condescending to the ones who already know and still participate for fun—because I absolutely get wanting to combat pseudoscience and misinformation.
However, I didn’t take this quiz myself, I found this in a post online and thought Programmer Humor subscribers would find it funny.

0·1 year agoAs a Real Woman™ I would never send a blurry candid to introduce my face. The poor lady who got her picture stolen (maybe this is a video screenshot?) probably has nicer shots of herself. Ironically the spammer trying to seem “authentic” with this picture just makes her feel faker. I imagine most people want to put our best foot forward and make a good impression, hence a nice picture.
Adult woman checking in. Aside from the feet in the air, this is my preferred programming posture! I hold this position easily for hours before getting sore elbows.
I am also small and a young adult not too many years away from teenagerhood. I hope your comment never becomes true for me with age. Looks like as long as I just maintain weight I should probably be safe, my shoulders are not getting any wider any time soon.
git add .>git commit -m "initial">git pushLater when I
git statusor just look at the repo online… “oh crap I let .DS_Store in didn’t I…” and then I remember to set up a .gitignore and make a new commit to take out the .DS_Store and put in the .gitignore.

Possibly tangential, but I figure people might also be interested in knowing that https://agelesslinux.org/ is also not age-gating
