I’m no expert, but it looks like much of that damage is fire - the internal upholstery is lying in ashes at the bottom rather than being scattered, the paintwork is all burned off. I’m assuming he was badly hurt, but managed to pull himself (or was pulled out) of the vehicle before most of the damage happened.

Anyway - lying in ICU spending the last of his days in agonising, crispy condition sounds much worse than a quick death. There is some justice in the world.

I do miss the two-player mode of Lemmings on the Amiga. Amiga could support a mouse in every port, so you could both use a mouse while battling each other. One player needing to use a joystick on ‘every other platform’ (which for Lemmings, was every other platform in existence at the time) was vastly inferior.

Basically every other computer either only supported one mouse, or all mice moved the same pointer.

Not saying that this is a generally useful feature, and networking has improved to the point where split-screen games are rare, and in an era where most games have console ports then mouse-control multiplayer games are unusual, but you know. Niche usages.

Well, the universe is expanding, and we don’t know why. Dark energy has come to dominate the energy balance of universe, and we don’t know what that is. We’ve a theory that’s great for describing small things, and a different theory that’s great for describing large or fast things, but they don’t line up, so we can’t have them quite right.

If the universe did have a period of greatly increased expansion shortly after the big bang, it doesn’t seem too crazy to suggest that you could do it again, at least in theory. Might require some absurd energy density. That much energy in one place is likely to collapse into a black hole, which would sort out contacting the universe again.

Even when I go to festivals with friends, we usually have slightly different priorities in who we want to see and end up separated anyway. Can catch up at breakfast time and get a report on how good the stuff that you couldn’t see was, which you can perfectly well do by speaking to randoms. Depends on the festival, of course - some are much more friendly than others.

I think the manga starts off really goofy and then gets more serious when it finds its feet. She becomes lots more serious after merging with the Puppet Master, which isn’t so significant in other adaptions, since she’s so serious before as well.

The 1995 anime reorders the plot of the manga a little so that it’s one big story, which to me is an improvement over the “disconnected vignette” style of the original. I wouldn’t want an adaption of that…

Professor Kitkat there has somehow gone from Pythagoras’ equation and the basic equations of a circle, to Einstein’s equation for mass-energy equivalence, without even showing the working for applying the Lorentz transformation. That’s the kind of haphazard mathematics I’d expect from a feline and has no place in a classroom setting. Zero marks.

For a long time, the editors of maths Wikipedia took objection to any ‘simplifying’ edits to make things more accessible, if they even slightly changed the meaning. Seems like a misunderstanding of what an encyclopedia is for, to me - overview first, expand afterwards. But I suppose mathematicians wouldn’t be mathematicians if they weren’t borderline obsessive. That first definition is probably more ‘correct’ although you’re quite correct that it’s almost unreadable.

Huh. Didn’t think that a field needed to have division defined on it, at least not in the ‘multiplication is the opposite of division’ way you’d expect. Learn something new every day.

A couple of years ago, I might have still checked protondb for Linux compatibility before making a purchase, but it seems a waste of time now. Everything that I’ve bought through Steam, or bought on GoG / claimed for free on Epic through Heroic has Just Worked, and has done for years. I think it got better when the Steam Deck was released; put a lot of visibility on Linux compatibility.

If you aren’t in to AAA, and even then only the competitive multiplayer with intrusive anticheat, then Linux is all you need.

Now, what’s the hypothesis that you can make out of it? We’ve plenty of observations that don’t match theory, which we believe to be on account of dark matter - galaxy rotation speeds, what happens in the core of a type 2 supernova, and so on. Does this hypothesis explain those problems better than what we have?

If it does, keep it. If it doesn’t, discard it. Repeat, until we’ve solved all the mysteries of the universe by banging our heads against them.

This strikes me as the kind of conjecture that has no predictive power, and therefore must be discarded, but I’m no PhD-level theoretical physicist.

The database is stored encrypted on disk, but the userspace program that authenticates to access it allows any running program to hook into it, and once the user authenticates, any ride-along program has full access forever.

Was just admiring my original copy of it earlier. I bought another copy off of GOG since it was about a pound on sale, which is a bargain compared to (a) connecting a working cd-rom drive to any of my computers (b) running the damned installer on Linux © fully patching it up to work.

Fallout 1 is much more consistent with better lore, but 2 has a lot more ‘game’ and is more fun to play. Fight me.
