Ragdoll X@lemmy.worldto politics @lemmy.world•Texas House introduces bill to establish a strategic bitcoin reserve1·5 months agoDidn’t some country already try this and fail miserably?
Edit: Oh yeah, El Salvador invested $150M in bitcoin only for it to lose half its value lol
Edit 2: lmao at the replies. For those of you who haven’t read the Wikipedia article on this, here’s the gist of it:
-
Salvadorian president Bukele forces businesses to accept BTC as legal tender, sets aside $150M in cash to back up his BTC plans, and offers $30 to anyone who signs up to a government-backed digital BTC wallet. Most Salvadorians never used it, and most who did just spend their $30 and leave. Less than 0.0001% of financial transactions use this BTC digital wallet, and most Salvadorians disapprove of Bukele’s decisions, with >70% having little or no confidence in BTC, and 9/10 not even understanding what it is.
-
Bukele announces a “Bitcoin City”, which leads to El Salvador’s overseas bonds to fall by 30%.
-
In 2022, because of the BTC crash, the Salvadoran national reserves lost $22M.
-
By 2022 only 20% of businesses were actually using BTC, and only 3% thought it was actually valuable. By that point El Salvador’s BTC had lost half of its value, and Bukele responded to its volatility by “buying the dip” like a maniac, with many economists predicting the country would likely default on its debt. And in usual right-wing fashion he cut public spending to make up for his incompetence, including water infrastructure and public services in some municipalities.
-
Finally, after all of this bullshit, in March 2024 El Salvador’s BTC holdings stood at a 50% profit. Now that it’s valued at >$100K their profit is higher, though by how much I’m not sure. Bukele still hasn’t sold the BTC for some reason.
If you look at all of this and genuinely think that the recent (and undoubtedly temporary) increase in the value of Bitcoin makes this whole thing a “Big Chungus W win for Bitcoin” or whatever, I strongly urge you to stay away from crypto and any casinos for your own sake. I assure you that there are plethora of better ways to spend the time of government employees and taxpayer money, and you deserve better than whatever faux-utopia crypto bros have sold to you. Actually investing in the country’s infrastructure and economy, or even something like Norway’s sovereign wealth fund, are much better ways to improve the economy without some long-term gamble that causes citizens to suffer.

Frankly I think that now they should focus on making these models smaller and more efficient instead of just throwing more compute at the wall, and actually train them to completion so they’ll generalize properly and be more useful.
Simply build a Paperwork Organiz-inator
Just don’t ask them what they were doing between 1933 and 1945
Recently I’ve actually been wondering how the hell researchers manage their citations for big projects, because a while back I started doing some research on the Cass Review, tripped on my own dick and accidentally ended up with 70-something disorganized citations (that I actually used) that were a pain in the ass to clean up.
I’m definitely checking out those first three software lol
Did the xLSTM end up going nowhere? I thought it looked pretty sexy.

IT’S JOEVER
And social media websites that allow porn (Twitter, Reddit, Lemmy, Tumblr)
Or just messaging apps where people send each other porn anyways (Whatsapp, Discord, Telegram)
Horny teens have always found ways to get their hands on porn, even before the internet. Studies from the 80s and 90s found that the same percentage of boys had accessed porn as more recent studies where the internet has already become widespread:
A study by Bryant [13] indicated that by the age of 15 years, 92% of boys had looked at or read Playboy, with average age of first exposure reported to be 11 years. Similarly, in regard to X-rated films, 92% of 13- to 15-years-olds reported that they had seen such a film. Most undergraduate men, when asked whether they have used sexual media in the past year, answer in the affirmative, although results vary between studies [14,15]. Studies in other cultures have found similar exposure patterns as in America. A recent study of 517 young men aged 18 to 27 years in Hong Kong indicated that 15.8 years was the average age of the first purchase of sexual media; just over half reported having used sexual media in the past 6 months [16]. The overall prevalence of having read, watched, or listened to sexual media in this sample was 91% (see Pan [17] for a lower prevalence estimate among Chinese young adults).
One of the community notes on the post said it was posted the day before by another account, and an AI image detector flagged it as AI with 90% confidence.
Musk using an AI image to fantasize about being some badass cowboy is both pathetic and absolutely expected lol
Ragdoll X@lemmy.worldto politics @lemmy.world•Recent Poll Examined Support for Political Violence in U.S.0·10 months agoWorth keeping in mind that polls measuring support for violence come with several caveats. For example a 2021 study assessed how question wording, respondent disengagement and illegitimate answers affected the results, finding that accounting for these factors lowered estimates of support for violence from 18.5% to 2.9%, or at most 6.9%. Even then there are arguments to be made about how social desirability bias and the specific scenarios presented can actually lead to underestimations.
Sometimes you have to use complicated terms because you’re dealing with complicated ideas…
Other times it’s clear that the authors are just trying to pad the length of a paper and sound more pompous.
In Brazil we call this “enchendo linguiça”, which literally translates to “filling sausage”.
As someone who’s not too familiar with the bureaucracy of academia I have to ask: Can’t the authors just upload all their studies to ResearchGate or some other website if they want? I know that they often share it privately with others when they request a paper, so can they post it publicly too?
Sorry to give you false hope 😔
But I still believe that we’ll get at least one video this year! 😭
Winter because I live in Brazil, which is a tropical and very humid country so the heat can get unbearable even here in the south where it’s colder compared to the north.
There are a few cities that get cold enough to reach negative Cº, but where I live it’s mostly between 10º-20º during winter so I just need some extra coats and more blankets and I’m happy. During summer I can only take off so many layers before it becomes illegal.
wow who coulda seen that one coming 🤯
