Solarpunk Urbanism@slrpnk.net•Atlanta is embracing a cheap, effective way to beat urban heat: 'cool roofs'English
5·5 months agoLoose dark clothing encourages airflow. Covering up prevents sunburn and direct solar heating.
For buildings, airflow can cool them too. But it doesn’t need to be done through dark roofs or dark exterior walls. And buildings could have more sunshades and awnings, and smaller windows to prevent solar heat gain.

1·6 months agoThis video is someone who actually drives a truck for a living, not a suburbanite who needs a lifted child slammer pickup to boost their fragile masculinity as they drive to the supermarket.

1·7 months agoI also switched to a trackball for ergonomic reasons. Not carpal tunnel, something with my thumb. I think ulnar and radial deviation (left and right movement from the wrist) aggravated it. Trackballs helped, as did physio.

Buy it for Life@slrpnk.net•Recommendations for rainproof trousersEnglish
1·9 months agoA cheap solution is to wax some thrift store or old trousers. Beeswax and paraffin, there are different ratios to experiment with, and premade bars you can buy. You rub some on and heat with a hair dryer or clothes iron (with parchment paper so the iron doesn’t get wax on it). It’ll darken the cloth. The more you put on the more waterproof and wind-resistant it’ll get. For bike pants you could focus on the front of the upper thigh and coat the rest less, leaving some breathability on the back.

Leopards Ate My Face@lemmy.world•Sen Jerry Moran (R) begs Trump to not let USAID food rotEnglish
1·10 months agoLiterally the ideology that made the Irish potato famine. The whole time the famine happened, Ireland was exporting food to England. And the English refused to give aid because it’d reward those pesky lazy overbreeding Irish poors. When they did send aid they refused to send milled corn so that those lazy starving Irish had to WORK for their damn corn gruel!

Polyester, acrylic, spandex, nylon. It’s sad that plastic clothes are cheaper than natural materials. Then again, natural materials probably need nitrogen fertilizer, made from fossil gas.

Ukraine@sopuli.xyz•The Ryazan Refinery was visited by Ukrainian UAVs again.English
1·10 months ago2 things might be happening recently, independently or not. Ukraine is ramping up the number of drones being sent out and getting more hits on refineries and factories. Or enough russian air defense units like S-300s have been taken out that it’s easier for drones to get by. Or both. The results are clear. Russia’s economy is going up in smoke.

But historically Canada has been content to be slightly leftward of the USA and to congratulate itself for it. If Mar-A-Gulago comes to pass, Canada will probably be happy with some intimidation and silencing of progressives. At least it’s not USA!

Climate - truthful information about climate, related activism and politics.@slrpnk.net•We've barely managed to make a tiny dentEnglish59·11 months agoThis is an excellent point. The energy transition is more accurately an energy addition. Some renewables on top of a still-increasing pile of burning fossil fuels.
Same with EVs. More are being sold every year but more ICE cars are being sold, too.
Until the fossil fuel industry actually shrinks, things are hopeless.
Russia already is doing this!
Very nice looking knife.
Mostly I use a regular kitchen knife (ie non serrated) for bread too, just have to keep it very sharp. It’s carbon steel so it’s easy to hone and strop.

6·1 year agoMore air defense in Chechnya means less on the front lines. No additional air defense in Chechnya means pissed off Chechens. Win-win.

I have a carbon steel knife a buddy of mine made, has lasted 10+ years. Holds a decent edge, so I can even shave my arm hair with it when it’s freshly sharpened.
Also have some cheap ass Kiwi brand paring knives made from kind of extremely soft stainless steel. Very easy to sharpen. They get used as steak knives, for cutting cheese, apples, etc.
