I love “folks”! It makes me think of folklore and looney tunes.

Trans Memes@lemmy.blahaj.zone•can you believe people say we do this for social perks?
1·21 days agoOr doing it for “attention”. Or “it’s just a phase”. I’m not trans, but I have two neurons and I see the account of soul searching, anguish and then rejection, discrimination and downright hatred trans people go through. I don’t think anyone would choose such a path if the other option, living hidden away, aka “”normally””, was manageable.
I hate how a big chunk of my work has become to write reports nobody should read. Our team produces a report every January, that gets passed to our director, that gets compiled into a yearly lab wide report, that gets combined into a 5-year report, that get sent to the government to ensure continuous funding… so much time wasted by everyone

I thought a bit part of the difference was made up by renewables. Guess for once I was too optimistic…
It’s difficult, because consent can be revoked at any time. So you could sign a contract em and then revoke consent (or others could use this to void the contract).
This is why, in many countries with euthanasia laws, euthanasia is assisted suicide in the literal sense as well; the person dying needs to physical pull the trigger.
TIL! Thanks! I did not understand it either and wondered if it was a typo - but couldn’t figure out the source either

0·2 months agoI’ve been reading it and I recommend it m mainly for this specific reason! Just because they were born long ago doesn’t make them stupid. And, thinking about it, maybe not having a massively time consuming and mind numbing job actually helped them develop their minds and thoughts.
Somehow I had heard that variant, but to me it still sounded like “do it at best you can, even if it’s not absolutely perfect”, so it was still a push to reach higher.
I once read “anything worth doing is worth doing poorly” and that flipped my world upside down.
Sure, sometimes you want to out in the extra work for “good” or even “great”, but sometimes “it is” it’s totally fine. Sometimes I cook a nice dinner, sometimes a plate of pasta with canned sauce is fine. Sometimes just doing something is totally okay, however it comes out.
I love a good quote with source! Isn’t the actual figure highly disputed?
It has encompassed most of Europe and North America… and a reasonably fitting descriptor to me

TechTakes@awful.systems•Duolingo is dying celebratory threadEnglish
13·7 months agoMy personal pet peeve about Duolingo;”: it doesn’t teach you a new language, it teaches you to translate to your main language. That’s absolutely not how you want to learn a language! You want the target language to stand on its own, not be piece-by-piece translated back at any interaction.
I can magnanimously appreciate Duolingo for the purpose of giving a rough base of a new language, maybe even a little but of vocabulary. I hate everything else about it.
