I’ve heavily encouraged people to make heavy use of it to avoid friction on this site.

Just food for thought for anyone who has ever wished to not see a comment from a toxic individual again: there’s literally a button for that!

Thank you for your attention on this matter!

Stop being libs and call it like you see it. Closing our eyes will change nothing.

Liberalism manifests itself in various ways.

To let things slide for the sake of peace and friendship when a person has clearly gone wrong, and refrain from principled argument because he is an old acquaintance, a fellow townsman, a schoolmate, a close friend, a loved one, an old colleague or old subordinate. Or to touch on the matter lightly instead of going into it thoroughly, so as to keep on good terms. The result is that both the organization and the individual are harmed. This is one type of liberalism.

To indulge in irresponsible criticism in private instead of actively putting forward one’s suggestions to the organization. To say nothing to people to their faces but to gossip behind their backs, or to say nothing at a meeting but to gossip afterwards. To show no regard at all for the principles of collective life but to follow one’s own inclination. This is a second type.

To let things drift if they do not affect one personally; to say as little as possible while knowing perfectly well what is wrong, to be worldly wise and play safe and seek only to avoid blame. This is a third type.

Not to obey orders but to give pride of place to one’s own opinions. To demand special consideration from the organization but to reject its discipline. This is a fourth type.

To indulge in personal attacks, pick quarrels, vent personal spite or seek revenge instead of entering into an argument and struggling against incorrect views for the sake of unity or progress or getting the work done properly. This is a fifth type.

To hear incorrect views without rebutting them and even to hear counter-revolutionary remarks without reporting them, but instead to take them calmly as if nothing had happened. This is a sixth type.

To be among the masses and fail to conduct propaganda and agitation or speak at meetings or conduct investigations and inquiries among them, and instead to be indifferent to them and show no concern for their well-being, forgetting that one is a Communist and behaving as if one were an ordinary non-Communist. This is a seventh type.

To see someone harming the interests of the masses and yet not feel indignant, or dissuade or stop him or reason with him, but to allow him to continue. This is an eighth type.

To work half-heartedly without a definite plan or direction; to work perfunctorily and muddle along–“So long as one remains a monk, one goes on tolling the bell.” This is a ninth type.

To regard oneself as having rendered great service to the revolution, to pride oneself on being a veteran, to disdain minor assignments while being quite unequal to major tasks, to be slipshod in work and slack in study. This is a tenth type.

To be aware of one’s own mistakes and yet make no attempt to correct them, taking a liberal attitude towards oneself. This is an eleventh type.

We could name more. But these eleven are the principal types.

They are all manifestations of liberalism.

Liberalism is extremely harmful in a revolutionary collective. It is a corrosive which eats away unity, undermines cohesion, causes apathy and creates dissension. It robs the revolutionary ranks of compact organization and strict discipline, prevents policies from being carried through and alienates the Party organizations from the masses which the Party leads. It is an extremely bad tendency

Clarification: This applies only between party rank-and-file, ie between politically active comrades who are working together. It’s wrong to conceive of this site as a party or even directed toward any actionable goal. Users on this site don’t need to be held to the standards of party members. It is good advice, but no one is obliged to be dragged into online arguments.

that’s what it was originally for, but it doesn’t have to be strictly confined to that. some of them are obviously applicable to just being a good comrade in everyday life and not specific to being in a militant communist organisation. i think there is a lot in there (and across Mao Zedong thought in general) that can and should be applied to everyday life. at least i see it as very valuable personally as someone who doesn’t have much energy for political activity beyond day-to-day agitation. point 1 is a point to live by, not some niche party/military concept.

sorry if this comes across combative or anything i think we are pretty much in agreement!

First, yes we are pretty much in agreement. No worries about any negative feelings.

It is great advice that I, too, try to live by. People are attracted to political work from many backgrounds, with varying interpersonal skills and potentially toxic behavior, not least of which is liberal civility. The advice is useful in daily life for that very reason that it was meant to raise the wisdom of individual party members.

It’s only in the context of party work that mere advice develops into obligation and moral code because, as Mao emphasizes on each point, there are objective harms to organized political work when not followed. And party members are obliged to follow these rules because they have themselves committed to the work. It’s not a standard held to the “masses”, and indeed not every person can or should commit themselves to party work.

Frankly, most people are just trying to survive. I cannot ask anyone to combat liberalism unless they have the capacity to do that.

I think the bigger problem is the habit of holding up the little red book as a Bible. Mao is right here, but he’s not right on the authority of him saying it, and we can get arguments from some of these points but not all of them

What use does any communist have posting on a site that’s only for venting and does not further the cause of reaching and supporting each other on a revolutionary foundation?

I don’t know about you, but I want to set up every user on this site with a room in an apartment building*, an e-bike, a PC, access to a tool library, a job in a workers’ co-op, and a cool shiny RC copterjust a toy, I promise. And I want to do the same for every network I’m in, not stopping until there are hundreds of thousands of thriving socialists that can live out their dreams.

There doesn’t need to be strict unity (rarely does anything ever need this), but there does need to be meaningful, consequential connection.

*Cob or strawbale construction, 20 m^2 per person, less than 5 km from business districts and also the woods, collective kitchens and composting latrines, rocket mass heaters, and solar panels to cover the remaining 300W per person needs.

This is probably the fifth time I’ve read Combat Liberalism and every time I’m struck by how perfectly Mao distilled the precepts. Evergreen advice. I should probably pin it up on the wall until I stop being such a LIB

It’s beautiful that it fits in a single comment. Brings a tear to the eye every time I see it.

It’s beautiful to think of Mao calling Trotsky the 4th type of Liberal

      good post

This user specifically, though, was called out on like a weekly basis, wasting dozens of hours of comrade’s labor trying to help them learn, and invariably each time crashing out and blocking the comrade engaging with them. They got reported many times before this latest crashout.

This is the kind of person that needs to be excised from a community quickly, without wasting effort that could be spent teaching others. Especially online where there are limited stakes and a single person can disproportionately influence the culture of a site by being always online.

We have finite time and there are too many shitheads to carefully explain to the ones that won’t listen. Organize the advanced, educate the intermediate, and isolate the backwards. Sometimes people in the party are backward enough that they need to be purged.
